Living with Autonomy: Public Perceptions of an AI-Mediated Future

Abstract: The arrival of autonomous systems powered by artificial intelligence (AI) offers new possibilities for life, yet the focus tends to be more on the technology than the people it serves. Planners should consider the likely reception awaiting emerging intelligent systems. Using an online survey of 3,249 faculty, staff, and students at a major research university, we tested perceptions of autonomy, including domotics and autonomous vehicles. Embracing the new technology with variations in attitude associated with … Show more

“…To measure public perceptions of AI about perceived benefits, risks, and trust, we developed constructs by following the lead of the academic literature on AI, public perceptions, and government decision automation (e.g. Fraszczyk and Mulley 2017 ; Araujo et al 2020 ; Peng 2020 ; Stai et al 2020 ; Cui and Wu 2021 ; Dennis et al 2021 ; Kassens-Noor et al 2021 ; Selwyn and Gallo Cordoba 2021 ). All items were measured on a 7-point Likert scale ranging from “disagree” to “agree” for perceived benefits and risks, and “distrust” to “trust” for the trust construct.…”

“…At present, AI is not only becoming an integral part of urban services, but also is impacting and shaping the future of living and cities [153,154]. Nevertheless, the current AI practice has shown that urban innovation without responsibility generates more problems than it solves.…”

“…Such a system may counter AV opponents' arguments by providing assurance that the AI's code is not merely rational and logical, but rather supported by a common and shared moral or ethical code. In particular, people's adoption of AI is likely if AI solution remain a tool to support work and not replace human-centered interaction (Kassens-Noor et al, 2021a). Precedence in other fields that had to make crucial choices between the greater public good and individual choices exist as they too have come to rely on AI analyzing big data.…”
