Impulse Dispersion of Aerosols during Singing and Speaking: A Potential COVID-19 Transmission Pathway

Abstract: Group singing events have been associated with several outbreaks of infection during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic (1). This link supports the possibility that aerosols are partly responsible for person-to-person infection. This study aims to analyze the impulse dispersion dynamics of aerosols in professional singers concerning the differences between singing a text, singing a vowel, or speaking at different levels of loudness. Some of the results of these studies have been previously reported in … Show more

“…3 b) and 4 b) for the cross flutes and clarinets. In accordance to the study with the singers [15], it could be assumed that this cloud motion was potentially produced by the motion of the player from the rear end of the platform (where he/she inhaled the aerosols) to the mark.…”

“…A Lynden Vox e-cigarette was used to nebulize this liquid, (Lynden GmbH, Berlin, Germany). The particles generated in e-cigarettes have a diameter in the range of 250 - 450 nm and are thus in the range of aerosols expelled during breathing and talking [15, 17]. For each task a spirometer (ZAN100, Oberthulba, Germany) was coupled to the mouthpiece of the e-cigarette to measure the individual inhaling volume.…”

“…Exhaled virus may potentially be spread via large droplets (>5 μm) or smaller aerosols (≤5 μm), with droplets falling to the ground or onto surfaces within close proximity of the patient, typically 1–2 m, and smaller aerosols becoming suspended in the air for longer periods, potentially enabling them to travel further distances 2,3 . The predominant means of spread for SARS‐CoV‐2 is felt to be droplet 3 ; however, breathing, speech and coughing produce aerosols and droplets which exist together on a continuum and there is increasing recognition that airborne spread via small aerosol particles is also a potential mode of virus infection 4–7 …”
