-Digital technologies, including hand-held laser scanners and locating systems, are being increasingly introduced to the construction market and have the potential to provide real-time data to create construction information modeling (e.g. shop drawings and as-built). Focusing on the unique advantage of these technologies, this paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for implanting such technologies to create multi-dimensional information modeling based on updated data from construction objects. The results of the paper will be based on implementation of a proposed framework to assist in semi-automated conversion of the raw 3D point clouds from advanced scanners into a compact, semantically rich model aiding in updating construction drawings and developing as-built models. A couple of advanced laser scanners have been deployed within an educational building and have scanned a floor as a sample in order to collect the data. In addition, further data was collected using novel positioning systems, to generate updated data from objectives and labor working in the sample area. The findings show that mobile laser scanners and the novel locating system are efficient tools for updating data to assist construction and maintenance managers to revise the drawings and use updated multi-dimensional models, and are about 50% less expensive than the current technologies. It was found that the practical framework -using mobile laser scanners -enables construction managers to acquire updated information from complex objects, using a real-time communication system. The study provides a step towards understanding the possibility of implementing advanced technologies and internet-of things in construction, and assisting in developing a shop drawing revision modelling for construction purposes.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are widely used for tunneling in urban areas because of their high advance rate, precise as-built profile and minimal impact to buildings and traffic on the ground. For a tunnel built by a TBM, there are strict requirements on alignment control and safety. To meet these requirements, it is important to monitor the position of the TBM. In the current practice, the TBM position data, including advance distance and line and level deviations, are reported manually to the managers on a daily basis. To interpret and analyze the position data, the managers also need to refer to various construction drawings. This practice is untimely, inefficient, and error prone for decision making. To improve the current practice, an automatic approach for real-time as-built tunnel product modeling and visualization is proposed, based on TBM position and orientation data autonomously sourced from the Virtual Laser Target Board (VLTB) TBM Guidance System developed at University of Alberta. Related information of the tunnel project, such as the as-designed alignment, soil layers, the ground, existing utility lines, is also visualized together with the model of the as-built tunnel. The modeling algorithm is presented step by step. Its application in a real-life drainage tunnel project is discussed and limitations are also identified.

ABSTRACT:In an extensive review of existing literature a number of observations were made in relation to the current approaches for recording and modelling existing buildings and environments: Data collection and pre-processing techniques are becoming increasingly automated to allow for near real-time data capture and fast processing of this data for later modelling applications. Current BIM software is almost completely focused on new buildings and has very limited tools and pre-defined libraries for modelling existing and historic buildings. The development of reusable parametric library objects for existing and historic buildings supports modelling with high levels of detail while decreasing the modelling time. Mapping these parametric objects to survey data, however, is still a time-consuming task that requires further research. Promising developments have been made towards automatic object recognition and feature extraction from point clouds for as-built BIM. However, results are currently limited to simple and planar features. Further work is required for automatic accurate and reliable reconstruction of complex geometries from point cloud data. Procedural modelling can provide an automated solution for generating 3D geometries but lacks the detail and accuracy required for most asbuilt applications in AEC and heritage fields.
