Challenges and Opportunities for Implementation of Laser Scanners in Building Construction

Abstract: -Digital technologies, including hand-held laser scanners and locating systems, are being increasingly introduced to the construction market and have the potential to provide real-time data to create construction information modeling (e.g. shop drawings and as-built). Focusing on the unique advantage of these technologies, this paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for implanting such technologies to create multi-dimensional information modeling based on updated data from construction objects. The … Show more

“…Similarly, variability related to rainfall patterns or temperature can be used to plan effectively for hydro-meteorological disasters. In the case of the visualization aspect of big data, 360 cameras, mobile and terrestrial laser scanners [74,144,[191][192][193][194], and 4D advertisements can help boost the smart real estate business. Similarly, weather sensors can be used to detect ambiguities in weather that can be visualized to deal with local or global disasters.…”

“…In recent years, laser scanning technology has been increasingly used for different purposes, including construction projects [16,17], for the provision of high-resolution point clouds of complex objects [18,19]. Another important application of point clouds is to track the physical progress of buildings and urban developments [20].…”

“…In comparing different technologies, it is clearly impossible to make perfect "apples for apples" comparison because the instruments by definition, use different technologies and different algorithms that subsequently provide a degree of minor difference in data capture and interpretation. This should not stand in the way of making comparison, but rather create the need for a careful focus on higher level performance outcomes that may affect user uptake (Sepasgozar et al 2016. For instance, the TLSs do indeed have adjustable data capture quality and whereas the HMSs (in their current stage of development) only have fixed density capture.…”
