Purpose: This study aims to identify and analyze the characteristics of international scientific research that addresses the segment of literature referring to port performance evaluation, in order to identify the existence of a theoretical alignment between the concept of performance evaluation, as an area of knowledge, and the practical application of port performance evaluation.Design/methodology: For the approach to the problem, this paper makes use of qualitative research, analyzing bibliographical portfolio characteristics related to port performance evaluation. An action research strategy was adopted, according to which the authors selected the bibliographical portfolio based on analysis and interpretation.

This paper investigates the current status and trends over time in the environmental performance of European ports. The research is based on the provision of data from 79 European ports on issues related to their environmental management, environmental priorities and current environmental monitoring practices. This study updates previous environmental reviews, so that the trends over time are drawn. For instance, 90% of respondent ports stated that they have an environmental policy and 94% of ports have designated environmental personnel. The percentage of ports that have an Environmental Management System has increased by +33% in the last 9 years. Air quality, port waste and energy consumption emerged as the three major environmental priorities of the European port sector in 2013. The research also reveals the diversity amongst European ports in terms of size and physical surroundings. Some examples are presented on specific initiatives carried out by sector organisations about the Top-10 port priority issues. O objetivo do estudo é analisar a gestão ambiental de portos brasileiros por meio do Índice de Desempenho Ambiental (IDA). Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa descritiva e com abordagem qualitativa em 27 portos públicos brasileiros, que responderam ao questionário do IDA aplicado pela ANTAQ no período de 2012 a 2016. Os resultados apresentados pelo IDA revelam um cenário positivo em portos brasileiros, quanto ao licenciamento ambiental (para licença de operação), auditorias ambientais, programas de educação ambiental nos terminais arrendados, e planos de gerenciamento de resíduos sólidos (PGRS). Pode-se concluir que o IDA em seu contexto traz contribuições para melhora da informação prestada para os diferentes stakeholders sobre o desempenho ambiental de portos. Entretanto, as informações geradas são qualitativas e expressam a opinião dos gestores por meio do questionário, mas não medem especificamente o desempenho ambiental.
