In Vitro Comparison of the Three Loop Pulley and Locking Loop Suture Patterns for Repair of Canine Weightbearing Tendons and Collateral Ligaments

Abstract: Both triceps tendons and the medial collateral ligaments of both stifles of 10 freshly euthanized dogs were sharply transected. One tendon and one ligament of each dog were sutured with a three loop pulley pattern, and the opposite tendons and ligaments were sutured with a locking loop pattern. The tendons and ligaments were harvested with their muscular and bony attachments. The anastomoses were slowly tested in tension until failure occurred. The amount of tensile load required to produce failure of the anas… Show more

“…Monofilament suture is recommended as it glides through tissue, enabling the suture to be tightened to bring the ends of the tendon together (Berg and Egger 1986). It has been shown that the development of a gap of more than 3 mm in size during healing results in slower healing and lower resistance to tension by six weeks (Gelberman and others 1999).…”

“…Healing depends mostly on the extrinsic blood supply from the paratenon; however, only prevention of gap formation enables fast revascularisation. Several methods for tendon repair are described including the locking loop (Kessler‐Mason‐Allen) suture technique (Tomlinson and Moore 1982), the modified Kessler suture (Aron 1981), the Krackow suture pattern (Krackow and others 1986), and the three‐loop pulley suture (Berg and Egger 1986). A modification of these techniques seemed necessary in the present case taking into account that the injury the cat sustained consisted of an avulsion of the triceps tendon from the olecranon and not of a true tendon rupture, leaving the bone and only minimal tendinous material for the surgical repair.…”

“…Após a síntese da fratura, procedeu-se à tenorrafia do tríceps adotando-se técnica de polia de três alças (Berg e Egger, 1986) associado à sutura epitendínea com pontos interrompidos simples, usando fio de sutura inabsorvível sintético, tipo poliamida 2-09. As fáscias musculares e o tecido subcutâneo foram aproximadas empregando-se fio de poliglactina 91 Oh em padrão de sutura contínuo simples.…”
