Human herpesvirus type 8 DNA sequences in biological samples of HIV-positive and negative individuals in Sicily

Abstract: HHV-8 is widespread in the general population in Sicily since it was detected in PBMC and semen of heterosexual HIV-negative individuals and is not found only in high-risk groups. The viral load appears to be more elevated in a high-risk population and it may be ascribed to a viral reactivation. The higher incidence rates of KS in Sicily compared with northern Italy and other European countries might be related to the presence of HHV-8 in the general population.

“…This conclusion is supported by other studies showing a low rate of parenteral transmission of HHV-8 (8,12,13). The lack of any statistically significant association between HHV-8 seropositivity and blood transfusion or years of dialysis suggests that HHV-8 transmission may involve other routes (4,5,6,10,15,22).…”

“…This rate was statistically indistinguishable from the rate (14.9%) observed in controls. The observed rate of seropositivity in pretransplant patients was higher than rates reported in other European countries (8,19) and can be explained by the higher-thanaverage HHV-8 seroprevalence in the general population of central and southern Italy (5,14,22,23). The data suggest that HHV-8 seroprevalence is unaffected by pretransplant therapeutic regimens.…”

“…Similarly, semen samples from healthy US, UK, French and some Italian donors did not contain detectable KSHV (Howard et al, 1997 ;Lebbe! et al, 1997 b ;Gupta et al, 1996 ;Corbellino et al, 1996 a, b), with one exception (Lin et al, 1995), whereas KSHV was detected in 13-23 % of Italian semen donors from areas where classic KS appears more frequently (Monini et al, 1996 a, b ;Viviano et al, 1997 ;reviewed in Blackbourn & Levy, 1997).…”

“…Since these behavioural risk factors have previously been shown to increase the risk of KS developing in homosexual men (Beral et al, 1990) this observation also supports the notion that KSHV is indeed the ' KS agent '. The detection of KSHV in seminal fluid and prostates of KS patients (Monini et al, 1996 a, b ;Howard et al, 1997 ;Gupta et al, 1996 ;Corbellino et al, 1996 a, b), and occasionally in healthy men (Monini et al, 1996 a, b ;Viviano et al, 1997 ;Staskus et al, 1997), provides a possible explanation for the sexual transmission observed in seroepidemiological studies.…”
