The article aims is to analyze the internet utilization patterns of rural households in selected European Union countries, particularly focusing on Poland, and to assess the specificity and level of differentiation in this area between countries. The study divides European Union (EU) countries into clusters based on the share of rural residents' using the internet from 2004 to 2022. Employing Ward's method and k-means clustering with the squared Euclidean distance measure, cluster analysis is used for country grouping. Internet functionalities are analyzed to understand consumer behaviors. The study shows that European countries can be categorized into four distinct groups according to the percentage of rural inhabitants who had access to the internet. Internet functionalities revealed variations in accessing information, scheduling medical appointments, social networking, online courses, and political engagement across these clusters. It was found that digital inequality among rural inhabitants in the EU persists, with varying levels of internet usage and utilization of internet functionalities. The convergence hypothesis suggests that less developed areas experience faster growth in internet usage, potentially reducing disparities. Policies promoting digital inclusion and advanced digital skills training are essential to bridge the digital divide in rural areas. In conclusion, access to internet functionalities, especially in healthcare and education, remains a challenge that requires attention. The study emphasizes the importance of considering cultural and socio-economic contexts in understanding digital inequality. This research sheds light on the digital divide in rural EU regions and highlights the need for targeted interventions to enhance digital inclusion and improve the quality of life for rural residents.

Purpose: Digitalization has been the driving change in creating jobs and increasing economic growth in recent years. However, the digitalization of countries and sectors is uneven. The paper focuses on various factors that have an impact on the economic development and well-being in EU countries. Its purpose is to show the evolution of EU countries in terms of digital transformation and how other indicators, such as e-government, human development index, labour productivity, and economic growth influenced the well-being in EU countries in 2019–2021.Design/methodology/approach: The dataset consists of 15 numerical indicators extracted from Eurostat and World Bank databases. We apply principal component analysis and cluster analysis.Findings and Practical Implications: The main research results show that the first dimension – named the impact of innovation on well-being – is dominated by e-government, the percentage of ICT specialists in total, internet use by individuals, the Human Development Index, the Digitalization Index, the Happiness Indicator, human capital, and the integration of digital technology. The second dimension is characterized by government expenses and productivity. Finally, the third dimension is dominated by the GDP growth rate. 77.67% of the total variance is explained by the first three principal components.Originality: Four clusters have been identified by means of the K-Means clustering algorithm. All four clusters are well determined, with cluster 1 including the three Nordic countries ranking first, followed by cluster 3 of well-developed countries and cluster 4 containing mainly emerging economies.

In the present study, an expert empirical analysis was carried out to assess the innovative strategies to improve the employment rate in the tourism small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of Iran. The methodology of this paper was extended based on two qualitative and quantitative techniques, namely strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and quantitative strategic planning matrix. Within this context, three strategies were chosen based on the sum of total attractiveness scores to increase more creation of new jobs and employment positions in tourism SMEs. Two aggressive and competitive strategies were entitled as ‘developing financial support to create the new job and employment positions using tourist’s finances’ and ‘defining smart skills and technologies to improve tourism SMEs toward the pandemic impacts’ in addition to a conservative strategy of ‘providing training support and education technology in the tourism SMEs. Results revealed that the contribution of total direct (indirect) employment to gross domestic product could be anticipated to equal 5.34% (14.86%) in the status quo (2020) by an enhanced rate of 1.97 (2.09) times compared with 2015. Ultimately, technological approaches were described under the innovative strategies to enhance new jobs and employment creation in the tourism SMEs of Iran.
