How effective are interface organizations in the promotion of university-industry links? Evidence from a regional innovation system

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of the interface organizations of a regional innovation system on the dynamics of knowledge transfer between universities and firms. Design/methodology/approach – The Triple Helix approach is used as a heuristic tool. The paper is based on a face-to-face survey to a sample of 800 innovative firms in Andalusia (Spain). “…Recent work by several European scholars has attempted to expand the triple helix model to include intermediaries that operate between universities, industry, and government in several European contexts (Fernández-Esquinas, Merchán-Hernández, & Valmaseda-Andía, 2016;Suvinen, Konttinen, & Nieminen, 2010;Todeva, 2013). While this work attempts to make the role of intermediaries more central, and uncovers the specific challenges of intermediation among the tripartite partners with differing goals, the theory is limited by its singular focus on university-industry-government links.…”

“…Similar functional decompositions have been lately used by Pinto et al (2015) and Fernández-Esquinas et al (2016) in their studies into universityindustry linkages. Authorities of the seven Polish state technological universities agreed to participate in a query regarding their institutions.…”

“…Developed countries provide many useful examples for developing countries, especially in terms of the roles of government and technology market in achieving a smooth technology flow between academic and industrial sectors with the help of intermediaries (e.g. Fernández-Esquinas et al, 2016;Howells, 2006). These intermediaries include spin-offs, incubators, science parks, R&D alliances, research centres, consultancy institutions, start-ups, technology transfer offices, associations, 720 EJIM 22,5 venture capital, U-I liaison offices and others (Yusuf, 2008).…”
