In light of Poland’s innovation performance level being below 70% of the EU average, open innovation can be a key path for innovation capacity increase. This paper explores the readiness of students in Poland for open innovation (OI). The study is based on a survey of a sample of 500 students using the Computer-Assisted Web Interview research technique. The main aim of this paper is to investigate Polish students’ attitude to open innovation—in particular in terms of social product development, crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, and the sharing economy—to assess the state-of-the-art and identify challenges. Students are selected as the target group because they are open-minded, eager to use new solutions, and will soon enter the business sector to either become the staff of companies or set up their own startups or SMEs. However, the study shows that Polish students, if they use the OI-based platforms at all, use them passively. The key barriers identified within this study are a lack of knowledge about the open innovation paradigm, its elements and opportunities, and an issue of trust. Therefore, a change of mindset, the adjustment of universities’ curricula, and the development of open innovation culture are critical.

This study examines the direct effect of entrepreneurial orientation, knowledge management, innovation capacity, and strategy implementation on the performance of Jambi University teaching staff. This research used a survey method with a quantitative approach. The research sample was 197 Education Staff at the University of Jambi. The research instrument used a questionnaire and was analyzed using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results of this study indicated that; (1) entrepreneurial orientation and knowledge management had a significant and positive impact on increasing innovation capacity. That is, the higher the entrepreneurial orientation and knowledge management by institutions, in this case at the University of Jambi, the better the innovation in business competitiveness. (2) knowledge management did not affect strategy implementation. It means that knowledge management indirectly has no role in the performance and implementation of strategies at Jambi University in the context of business competitiveness in the BLU financial management pattern. (3) entrepreneurial orientation, innovation capacity, and strategy implementation had a significant effect on improving the performance of Jambi University institutions, meaning that the higher the entrepreneurial orientation, innovation capacity, and strategy implementation, the better the performance of Jambi University institutions in supporting universities with public service agency status (BLU).

The Mediating Role of Knowledge Creation Processes in the Relationship Between Social Media and Open Innovation

The purpose of the study is to empirically examine the role of absorptive capacity, as a set of knowledge creation processes, in the relationship between social media and open innovation in the family firm context. In addition, the study analyses the impact of social media use as an antecedent of open innovation in the firms. The examined sample was composed by 113 responding family firms in Spain. The model was estimated through PLS-SEM with smartPLS software 3.3.3. Results confirm the key role played by absorptive capacity in the relationship between social media use and open innovation, proving also how social media use appears as a relevant enabler of open innovation practices. Moreover, findings support the importance of social media use for acquiring external information and knowledge which in turn can help family firms to gain more innovative opportunities. Our paper suggests that managers of family firms should foster an appropriate culture of learning in their firms and provide specific training to develop the staff ability to acquire, integrate and use information captured by digital platforms. Social media has totally transformed the way firms relate to the market and provides a useful tool to collect external knowledge and information. These tools are used by family firms as a new form to connect and collaborate with different stakeholders, so they have the potential to enhance open innovation activities. However, empirical research on the topic remains scarce and is challenging for managers to benefit from all the potential that social media can bring in fostering innovation and to develop dynamic capacities of knowledge management in the family firm context.
