Hepatotoxic and invivo antioxidant potential of Pandanus odoratissimus against carbon tetrachloride induced liver injury in rats

Abstract: The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant effect of methanol extract of Pandanus odoratissimus lim (MEPO) leaf in wistar albino rats. The animals were grouped differently and administered with Carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) (1.5/kg −1 CCl 4 1 ml kg −1 in liquid paraffin 3 doses (i.p) at 72 h interval). The extracts at the doses of 50 and 100 mgkg −1 and Liv 52 25 mg kg −1 were administered to the CCl 4 treated rats. The effect of extract and Liv 52 on serum transaminase (GOT, GPT), alkaline … Show more

“…It has been reported that P. odoratissimus L. (whole plant) exhibits significant antitumor and antioxidant activities in Ehrlic ascites carcinoma bearing mice [13]; and its leaves possess moderate activity on antioxidant enzymes such as lipid peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione [16,17]. A recent study has also suggested that the methanolic peduncle extract of P. odoratissimus L. has a potential antioxidant activity [18].…”

“…A recent study has also suggested that the methanolic peduncle extract of P. odoratissimus L. has a potential antioxidant activity [18]. Previous investigation into the hepatoprotective activity of the methanolic extract of P. odoratissimus L. leaf against CCl 4 -induced liver damage reported signs of restoration of liver damage to the normal state [17].…”

“…Moreover, the methanolic leaf extract of Pandanus Odoratissimus L. has also been reported to possess moderate activity of antioxidant enzymes such as lipid peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione 24,25 . The discrepancy observed may be due to the different nature of bioactive compound from one part to another of inflorescent of Pandanus Odoratissimus L.…”

“…It is experimentally validated that P. odoratissimus possess antibacterial (Wei et al 2008;Kumar et al 2010;El-Shaibany 2014), anti-inflammatory (Londonkar et al 2010), antioxidant (Jong and Chau 1998;Londonkar and Kamble 2009;Sasikumar et al 2009;El-Shaibany 2014), antitumor (Panigrahi et al 2011), antidiabetic , antiepileptic (Adkar et al 2014), anti-hyperlipidemic (Zhang et al 2013), CNS depressant (Raju et al 2011), nocturnal enuresis (El-Shaibany 2014), hepatoprotective and hepatocurative (Ilanchezhian and Joseph 2010;Londonkar and Kamble 2011) activities. The principle constituent of P. odoratissimus oil, b-phenyl ethyl methyl ether, is responsible for the characteristic aroma of spadices.…”
