Hepatoprotective effect of Alchornea cordifolia leaf on liver damage in albino rats

Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: The dry leaf of Alchornea cordifolia (AC) is used, in traditional medicine in the S Nigeria, for the preparation of blood tonic, remedies for urinary, respiratory, liver and gas intestinal disorders. Aim of the study: This study investigated the protective property of AC leaf against liver damage in animals with a view to exploring its use for the treatment of hepatotoxicity in humans. Material and methods: Ethanol extract of A. cordifolia was used to study the hepatoprotective … Show more

“…The microphotography of rat livers that received the extracts alone did not show any biochemical parameter disturbances. The results of this study were in agreement with the study of Jacob et al (2014), [9] in which A. cordifolia attenuated hepatocellular lesions induced by paracetamol at high doses. However, Ajibade and Olayemi (2015) [19] showed that methanolic extract of A. cordifolia, administered alone at doses of 800 mg/kg and 1600 mg/kg for 8 consecutive days, caused hepatocellular damage.…”

“…Indeed, A cordifolia was harvested for this study in its natural environment in Côte d'Ivoire while Ajibade and Olayemi (2015) [19] harvested it in a botanical garden in Nigeria. It was the same case with the plant studied by Jacob et al (2014) [9] which was harvested in its natural environment on uncultivated agricultural land. Protective effects against hepatocellular damage were observed with the methanolic extract of A. cordifolia at doses of 400 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg, as well as with the aqueous extract at a dose of 800 mg/kg.…”

“…Several reports on the biological activities of A. cordifolia have shown the plant to possess antiinflammatory, antidiarrhoeal, hepaprotective, antiviral, and antidiabetic properties [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. In addition, various antimicrobial screenings of A. cordifolia have revealed its effectiveness against a wide range of pathogenic microbes including gastrointestinal, skin, respiratory, and urinary tract pathogens, thus supporting the traditional use of the plant for the treatment of such ailments [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”
