Deeper Insights on Alchornea cordifolia (Schumach. & Thonn.) Müll.Arg Extracts: Chemical Profiles, Biological Abilities, Network Analysis and Molecular Docking

Abstract: Alchornea cordifolia (Schumach. & Thonn.) Müll. Arg. is a well-known African medicinal plant traditionally used for various healing purposes. In the present study, methanolic, ethyl acetate and infusion extracts of A. cordifolia leaves were studied for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents and screened for their chemical composition. Moreover, the enzyme (acetyl- and butyryl-cholinesterases, α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and tyrosinase) inhibitory and cytotoxicity activities on HepG2: human hepatocellula… Show more

“…The HPLC results showed the copious presence of chlorogenic acid, benzoic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, sinapic acid, luteolin, catechin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, quercetin, myricetin, and kaempferol in A.cordifolia leaves. Previous studies have commonly identified these compounds in ethanol, methanol, and ethyl acetate extracts of A.cordifolia [54][55] [56][57] [58]. Phytochemicals such as flavonoids (e.g.…”

“…Different classes of phytochemicals including tannins, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and fatty acids with potent antimicrobial activities have been identified or isolated from extracts of A. cordifolia (Nwaoguikpe et al 2014;Boniface et al 2016;Sinan et al 2021). Preparatory thin layer chromatography (PTLC) and column chromatographic fingerprinting on methanol leaf extract of A. cordilia yielded a total of 32 and 104 fractions with 163 compounds respectively which are thought to underscore its potent bioactivity (Ebi 2001).…”

“…Qualitative phytochemical screening was done on the two extracts of Piliostigma thonningii root using standard procedures described by Sinan et al, (2021) to determine the phytochemicals present in the plant extract. The extracts (5 mg) were dissolved in 50 mL of the respective solvents used for their extraction.…”
