This research aims to find the habitat-dependent variation of micromorphological characteristics in the leaves of Fraxinus excelsior (European ash), Platanus orientalis (Plane tree) and Tilia tomentosa (Silver lime) collected from 6 different cities of different climates. The leaves were collected in Turkey in the cities of Rize, Samsun, İzmir, Antalya, Sivas, and Ankara. Samsun and Rize fall under the Black Sea climate region, Ankara and Sivas under the continental climate, whereas Antalya and İzmir enjoy a Mediterranean climate. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to highlight the visible morphological characteristics of the plant, we hoped to uncover how stress affects the micro-morphological properties of the plant but does not affect its vital functions. Leaf epidermis images were obtained with SEM and stoma width (μm), length (μm), pore width (μm), pore length (μm), and density (in an area of 1 mm 2 ) measurements were obtained using Image J (https://imagej.net) software. A Duncan test and variance analysis were performed via SPSS® (IBM Analytics) and the habitat-dependent change of these characteristics was evaluated statistically. Accordingly, we determined that the stomatal characteristics varied depending on the habitat, but trees were affected differently by climate conditions. The micromorphological characteristics on the leaves depending on growth conditions were also investigated.

This study highlights the trace metal and metalloid (TMM) accumulation in Rosmarinus officinalis L. and its chemical responses when exposed to high levels of contamination. R. officinalis individuals growing along a gradient of mixed TMM soil pollutions, resulting from past industrial activities, were analysed. Several plant secondary metabolites, known to be involved in plant tolerance to TMM or as a plant health indicator, were investigated. The levels of thiol compounds and phytochelatin precursors (cysteine and glutathione) in the shoots were measured in the laboratory, while a portable non-destructive instrument was used *Revised manuscript with no changes marked 2 to determine the level of phenolic compounds and chlorophylls directly on site. The level of Pb, As, Sb and Zn contaminations within the soil and plants was also determined. The results highlighted a decrease of TMM translocation with increases of soil contamination. The concentration of TMM in the shoots followed the Mitscherlich equation and reached a plateau at 0.41, 7.9, 0.37, 51.3 mg.kg-1 for As, Pb, Sb and Zn, respectively. In the shoots, the levels of thiols and phenols were correlated to concentrations of TMM. Glutathione seems to be the main thiol compounds involved in the tolerance to As, Pb and Sb. Phenols indices, using non-destructive measurements, may be considered as an easy way to establish a proxy to estimate the TMM contamination level of the R. officinalis shoots. The study highlights metabolic processes that contribute to the high potential of R. officinalis for phytostabilisation of TMM in contaminated areas in the Mediterranean.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of different heavy metals and its doses on germination and early seedling stage of maize (Zea mays L.) at the Akdeniz Univesity, Agricultural Faculty, Department of Field Crops in 2017. Heavy metals such as lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) and its doses such as 0 (control), 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg L -1 were used as experimental factors. This research was laid out on the factorial arrangements design in randomized parcels with 4 replications. Germination percentage (%), germination index, mean germination time (day), radicle length (mm), plumula length (mm), radicle fresh weight (mg plant -1 ), plumula fresh weight (mg plant -1 ), radicle dry weight (mg plant -1 ) and plumula dry weight (mg plant -1 ) properties were investigated in germination and early seedling stage of maize. As results of this study, Toxicity effects of heavy metals used in this research were listed as mercury> cadmium> lead> chromium> nickel. Also, in 400 and 800 mg L -1 doses of mercury and cadmium heavy metals were found to be more toxic than the same doses of others. 100 and 200 mg L -1 doses of heavy metals used in this work caused the stimulant effects on germination and early seedling stage of maize.
