The aim of this study was to assess, for two Italian meat sheep breeds (Appenninica and Merinizzata italiana), the relationship between an easily recorded measurement (girth of chest) and the character used for selection purposes (weight), and to define the most appropriate mathematical methods to infer the second from the first. For the Appenninica 1392 lambs were measured, for the Merinizzata italiana 1559 lambs were measured. The possibility of estimating weight through chest girth (CG) measurement was evaluated, separately for each breed, by taking the most suitable model between those including different kinds of regression effect. The model was chosen in relation to the value of the determination coefficient and the sum of square residuals. The prediction accuracy of the model was assessed by comparing the expected values with the observed ones through a number of statistical tests. A further prediction analysis was carried out using the mean values of the observed weights that fell in each 1 cm class of girth, in order to reduce the error derived by the varying numbers of observations per unit of chest girth. The model including the square regression nested within the sex effect and the flock random effect nested within the sex effect was observed to be the most suitable one to predict the weight from the chest girth; the determination coefficients ranged between 0.944 (Appenninica) and 0.955 (Merinizzata). The prediction parameters were: -10. ) for the Merinizzata females. The correlation between the observed and expected values was always higher than 0.97. The equations estimated using the mean weights for each girth showed extremely high determination coefficients (= 0.99) due to the reduction of variability implied by this method. Choosing between the equations calculated on the entire data set or on the mean weights will only be possible after a period of field tests.

Bras. 29(3):233-240, março 2009 RESUMO.-Descrevem-se três surtos de intoxicação por vagens de Prosopis juliflora no Sertão e Agreste de Pernambuco, na região semi-árida, em animais pastejando áreas invadidas pela planta ou que ingeriram as vagens como alimento concentrado. Em duas fazendas nas que a doença ocorria esporadicamente foram observados casos individuais. Em outra, o surto afetou um rebanho de 1206 bovinos, dos quais adoeceram 112 (9,28%) e morreram 84 (6,96%), enquanto os demais 28 (2,32%) recuperaram-se e ganharam peso após a retirada das vagens da alimentação. Clinicamente observou-se, principalmente, perda de peso progressiva, atrofia da musculatura da face e masseter, mandíbula pendulosa, protrusão de língua, dificuldade de apreensão e mastigação dos alimentos, torção da cabeça para mastigar ou ruminar, salivação excessiva, disfagia e hipotonia lingual. Nos exames laboratoriais constatou-se anemia e hipoproteinemia. Three outbreaks of poisoning by Prosopis juliflora pods are reported in the semiarid region of the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil, in cattle grazing in fields invaded by the plant or ingesting mesquite beans as a concentrate food. In two farms the disease occurred sporadically. In another, 112 (9.28%) cattle out of 1206 were affected, 84 (6.96%) died due to emaciation, and 28 (2.32%) gained weight after the pods had been withdrawn from the feed. Main clinical signs were progressive weight loss, atrophy of the masseter muscles, dropped jaw, tongue protrusion, difficulties in prehending food, tilting the head during mastigation or rumination, salivation, impaired swallowing, and decreased tone of the tongue. The hematology reveals hypoproteinemia and anemia. Gross lesions were emaciation and reduction in size of the masseter muscles, which appear thinner than normal and grayish due muscular atrophy. Degeneration of neurons of the trigeminal motor nuclei, Wallerian degeneration of the trigeminal nerve roots, and muscular atrophy of the masseter muscles with substitution by fibrous tissue were observed on histologic examination. For the prevention of the poisoning is necessary to limit the amount of mesquite beans in animal nutrition. It is also necessary to develop research to determine the economic and sustainability of the use of Prosopis juliflora for animal food, human food or other uses such as charcoal, wood and fuel wood. Mesquite (Prosopis L.) is considered an invasive browse species in most of the American Southwest. Mechanical intervention removes yields an excess of organic debris. Anecdotal evidence in the past has supported using such browse as feed for livestock. Thus, our objectives were to (1) determine the nutritive value and fermentation characteristics of silage produced with mesquite biomass, and (2) evaluate solvent treatment of mesquite biomass prior to ensiling. In Experiment 1, we evaluated mesquite inclusion rate (0, 250, 500, 750, or 1000 g kg−1 DM), length of fermentation (28, 56, or 84 d), and silage inoculant. In Experiment 2, we evaluated the effects of mesquite pre-treatment with acid (H2SO4) or alkali (NaOH) solutions. Concentrations of NDF, ADF, and ADL, as well as IVTD, decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing mesquite inclusion. However, 250 g mesquite kg−1 DM did not differ from grass silage. There was no effect (p > 0.05) of inoculation, though increasing length of incubation did increase (p < 0.05) VFA production and decrease (p < 0.05) silage pH. Solvent treatment did not improve ensiling properties. Results are interpreted to mean that mesquite biomass may be effectively incorporated into silage at levels up to 250 g kg−1.
