Gross motor skill acquisition in adolescents with Down syndrome

Abstract: -The purpose of this study was to assess whether verbal-motor performances deficits exhibited by individuals with Down syndrome limited their ability to acquire gross motor skills when given visual and verbal instruction together and then transferred to either a visual or verbal instructional mode to reproduce the movement. Nine individuals with Down syndrome (6 males, 3 females) performed 3 gross motor skills. Both visual and verbal instructional guidance was given to the participants over a 4-day period. “…Hernandez and et al, Zimmer and et al, Deli and et al, and Wang, J in various investigations have verified effectiveness of the following treatment plans: The effect of gross motor skills on the boy pupils' attention process with Down's syndrome, the influence of the sensory integration treatment on fine and gross motor skills in 5-7 year old children with Down's syndrome, efficacy of proprioceptive and simultaneous motivations over 6-7 year old children's dexterity with this syndrome, the influence of sensory integration method and training motorperception skills on motor problems of dyslexic children, the investigation of the influence of sensory stimulations and motor exercises on hand skills in mentally-retarded children, learning of gross motor activities in adolescents with Down's, the effectiveness of sensory integration treatment, the combination of sensory integration method with vestibular motivations (3,5,7,9,(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19). On the one hand Since the existence of processing problems and sensory integration in children with Down's syndrome and its influence on the motor development is an obvious matter; and on the other hand as therapists have access to effective treatment approaches for obviating these setbacks; the enough research in relation to the influence of this treatment method has not been done On children's motor development with Down's While the scrutiny of the usefulness of sensory stimulation remedy in different disorders needs numerous surveys.…”

“…Children with Down syndrome initiate and complete movements more slowly and with greater variability compare to the children without disabilities of a similar chronological age [2]. Children with this syndrome may also have other health problems such as heart disease, dementia, hearing problems and problems with the intestines, eyes, thyroid and skeleton.…”

“…The atypical patterns of brain organization could likely be responsible for many general cognitive characteristics that generate certain difficulty in perception, organization and motor response (Meegan, Maraj, Weeks, & Chua, 2006;TorrianiPasin et al, 2013). Still, the movement characteristics of individuals with DS have also been attributed to structural peculiarities such as the brainstem, cerebellum' sizes (Millan Sanchez et al, 2012) and pro-oxidant status (Aguiar et al, 2008).…”
