This paper reports the synthesis of gold-silver bimetallic nanoparticles (Au-AgNPs) with different Ag : Au compositions in an aqueous medium and their attachment on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) via a 1,6-hexadiamine (HDA) linker for the electrochemical reduction of hydrogen peroxide (HP) and nitrobenzene (NB). Initially, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by the reduction of silver nitrate using trisodium citrate as a capping agent and sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. Then, the Au-AgNPs were prepared by the galvanic displacement of Ag (0) by AuCl 4 À ions. The composition of the Au-AgNPs was varied by changing the mole ratio of Ag : Au in the range of 1 : 0 to 1 : 0.16. TEM images show that the Au-AgNPs were spherical in shape with a diameter of $16 nm. The prepared colloidal solution of Au-AgNPs were then attached on a HDA modified GCE through the Michael's addition reaction and were confirmed by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), line scanning analysis, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The AFM image shows that the Au-AgNPs were densely packed on the electrode surface. The Au-AgNPs modified electrode exhibits a higher heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant of 2.77 Â 10 À7 cm s À1 when compared to Ag and AuNPs modified electrodes. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic activity of the Au-AgNPs modified electrode was examined by studying the reduction of HP and NB. It was found that the Au-AgNPs with the Ag : Au mole ratio of 1 : 0.12 showed excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the reduction of both HP and NB by not only shifting their reduction potentials toward less negative potentials but also enhanced their currents compared to the bare GCE, Ag and AuNPs modified electrodes and Au-AgNPs of other molar ratios. A simple and facile green process was used for the synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite by using Ipomoea pes-tigridis leaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The as-prepared rGO/FeNPs nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The nanocomposite was further modified on the glassy carbon electrode and used for non-enzymatic sensing of hydrogen peroxide (HO). Cyclic voltammetry results reveal that rGO/FeNPs nanocomposite has excellent electro-reduction behavior to HO when compared to the response of FeNPs and rGO modified electrodes. Furthermore, the nanocomposite modified electrode shows 9 and 6 folds enhanced reduction current response to HO than that of rGO and FeNPs modified electrodes. Amperometric method was further used to quantify the HO using rGO/FeNPs nanocomposite, and the response was linear over the concentration ranging from 0.1μM to 2.15mM. The detection limit and sensitivity of the sensor were estimated as 0.056μM and 0.2085μAμMcm, respectively. The fabricated sensor also utilized for detection of HO in the presence of potentially active interfering species, and found high selectivity towards HO.

Nanotechnology continues to achieve tremendous awards in therapeutics, but the economical and ecofriendly production of nanoparticles (NPs) is still in infancy, simply due to the nanotoxicity, unprecedented health hazards and scale up issues. Green nanotechnology was introduced in the quest to mitigate such risks by utilizing natural resources as biological tool for NP synthesis. The key advantages offered by green approach include lower capital and operating expenses, reduced environmental impacts, superior biocompatibility and higher stability. In this review, we shed light on the biosynthesis of therapeutic NPs along with their numerous biomedical applications. Toxicity aspects of NPs and the impact of green approach on it, is also discussed briefly.
