Genetic Diversity and Utilization of Cultivated Eggplant Germplasm in Varietal Improvement

Abstract: Eggplant is the fifth economically most important vegetable in the Solanaceae family after tomato, potato, chili, and tobacco. Apart from the well-cultivated brinjal or aubergine eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), two other underutilized eggplant species, the African eggplant (S. macrocarpon L.) and the scarlet eggplant (S. aethiopicum L.), were also cultivated with local importance where the leaves and fruits are used for food and medicinal purposes. The major objectives of the eggplant breeding program are to … Show more

“…Obtaining more eggplant drought-tolerant cultivars depends on the identification of germplasm of interest and the introgression of relevant genes. Both steps require efficient, fast, and preferably inexpensive methods [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. With the development of new generations of cultivars with introgressed genes providing tolerance, higher yields could ultimately be obtained in the face of climate change effects.…”

“…On the other hand, fruits of 'Amedo' significantly exceeded all other cultivars in their content of vitamin C, niacin and omega 3. According to Oladosu et al (2021) the amount of niacin in eggplant fruits is 0.649 mg/100 g DW. Whitley et al (2011) detected significant differences among the different peanut varieties in niacin concentrations, being ranged from 13.9 to 20.7 mg/100g DW.…”

“…Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is a warm-weather crop and one of the most important vegetable crops worldwide, especially in Africa, subtropical regions, Southeast Asia and the Middle East (FAO, 2017, Chapman, 2019. Eggplant fruit is a rich source of vitamins, essential minerals and some bioactive compounds that have beneficial properties for human health as well as a low caloric value (Kowalski et al, 2003, Oladosu et al, 2021. It is also one of Egypt's most economically important vegetable crops, ranking fourth in the Solanaceae family after tomato, potato, and pepper.…”
