A need for more realistic tooth models for education has often been expressed by dental students. The aim of this study was to design and create 3D printed teeth with anatomical details for use in preclinical dental education. A tooth with realistic carious lesions and pulp cavity was designed, and this tooth was used in 2018 with 47 dental students for preclinical education in caries excavation, direct capping of the pulp, core build‐up, and crown preparation. The students had the ability to identify the carious lesions by a simulated radiograph and by tactile sense of the consistency. The benefits of the 3D printed tooth were evaluated by a questionnaire. The printed tooth was evaluated by grades (1=excellent, 2=good, 3=satisfactory, 4=adequate, 5=poor). The students gave the tooth an overall mean grade of 1.9, with a grade of 2.0 for the haptic impression, 1.5 for the exercise, 1.9 for the examination, and 1.5 for high practical relevance in contrast to a standard model tooth. The new features of the printed tooth were given a mean grade of 2.0 for the radiograph, 2.3 for consistency of the caries, 2.0 for the tooth filling, and 1.7 for the pulp capping as realistic. The students had the possibility to generate a complete concept for prosthodontic tooth treatment on an artificial 3D printed tooth.

SUMMARY:The planning and 3D reconstruction in craniofacial defects based on anatomical principles of symmetry and passive adaptation has evolved radically the past few years. This article recounts the possibility to develop personalized and extensive craniofacial implants. We present a case of a patient with a 10-year trauma sequel evolution; the patient lost the right frontal bone, supraorbital wall and part of the temporal fossa. From the computerized tomography, and by using Materialise software (3-Matic and Mimics). Subsequently, the printing was performed using the virtual planning with a laser printer in titanium where the piece was elaborated with the determined specifications in the planning; surgery was performed without complications in which the implant was placed via a coronal approach, which did not require any type of adaptation. After a two-year follow-up we observed a correct position, symmetry, absence of infection or any other alteration. It is concluded that the planning and 3D printing are suitable to perform craniofacial reconstructions with a low morbidity, shorter surgical time, and with an adequate facial symmetry and aesthetic return.

In recent years, the rapid development of 3D printing technologies lead to its new applications in the area of healthcare and medicine, including dentistry, orthopedics, cardiovascular, pharmaceutics, neurosurgery, engineered tissue models, medical devices, and anatomical models. Dentistry is widely acknowledged to benefit from 3D printing technologies due to its needs for the customization and personalization of dental products. In this review, the authors discuss and summarize various 3D imaging technologies and the recent advances of 3D digital processing techniques in dentistry in an effort to give a new perspective and greater understanding of the current development of 3D printing technologies in dentistry. It is anticipated that this review will explore why 3D printing is important to dentistry, and why dentistry motivates development in 3D printing applications. Further, current challenges and further perspectives are also discussed which helps researchers to optimize the 3D printing technology in dentistry, improve 3D printing strategies, and direct future dental bioprinting and translational applications.
