RESUMO:As dermatopatias correspondem a maioria dos atendimentos realizados em clínicas veterinárias de pequenos animais. Dentre essas, as micoses cutâneas comumente diagnosticadas são dermatofitose, malasseziose e candidose. Além disso, os cuidados com animais de estimação cresceram auxiliados pelo surgimento de pet shops. O objetivo foi isolar e identificar leveduras e dermatófitos em instrumentos de tosa de ambientes veterinários em Pelotas, RS, Brasil. Em pet shops, consultórios e clínicas veterinárias foram coletadas amostras de rascadeiras e lâminas da máquina através de swabs estéreis e impressão em placas com ágar Sabouraud acrescido de cloranfenicol, azeite de oliva e ciclohexemida, incubadas a 25º e 37ºC, por até 35 dias. As colônias filamentosas foram identificadas conforme as características do grupo dermatófitos e as leveduras, através de método automatizado. A análise de frequência de isolamento foi realizada pelo método qui-quadrado. Foram coletados 1 hospital veterinário, 4 clínicas, 4 consultórios veterinários e 6 pet shops resultando em 150 amostras, sendo 80 da lâmina da máquina de tosa e 70 da rascadeira. O isolamento fúngico foi obtido em 58 amostras, das quais 58,6% eram da lâmina da máquina de tosa e 41,4% da rascadeira, resultando em 78 isolados leveduriformes; uma vez que não foram isolados fungos filamentosos do grupo dermatófitos. Malassezia pachydermatis foi a levedura mais frequentemente isolada, tanto nas amostras da lâmina da máquina de tosa quanto nas da rascadeira, enquanto que, Trichosporon sp. foi isolado somente nas da rascadeira. Assim, a lâmina da máquina de tosa foi a mais contaminada, com predominância de M. pachydermatis, entretanto, nenhum dermatófito foi isolado. Among these, the most commonly diagnosed cutaneous mycoses are dermatophytosis, malasseziosis and candidiasis. Due to the importance of the growing pet care business with the spread of pet shops, this study aimed to isolate and identify the occurrence of yeasts and dermatophytes in shearing tools used in veterinary environments in the city of Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Slicker and clipper blade samples were collected in pet shops as well as veterinary offices and clinics by sterile swabs and pressed onto plates containing Sabouraud agar added with chloramphenicol, olive oil and cycloheximide, incubated at 25 o and 37 o C for up to 35 days. Filamentous colonies were identified according to dermatophytes group characteristics, and yeasts according to the automated method. ABSTRACT:The white-eyed parakeet (Aratinga leucophthalma), also known in Brazil as "periquitão-maracanã," "aratinga-de-bando," "araguaí" and "maritaca," belongs to the family Psittacidae. The fungal genus Malassezia, which lives on the surface of the skin and mucosae of some mammals and birds, is a commensal organism that may sometimes act as a pathogen. This paper describes the presence of Malassezia spp at the edge of the eye of a white-eyed parakeet seized by IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) and examined at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) Veterinary Hospital. The examination of the bird revealed the presence of a small white rounded structure at the edge of its right eye. The bird was sedated and a fragment of the structure was removed and sent to the university's Laboratory of Infectious Diseases. This material was seeded in blood and MacConkey agars and a slide was prepared and stained by the Gram-staining technique; no biochemical assays were performed. Reading was performed in an optical microscope under 100X magnification, revealing flattened oval colonies resembling purplish footprints, indicative of Malassezia spp. The bird was not treated because the structure gradually diminished in size until it disappeared completely after the animal was isolated in a clean well ventilated place and supplied with water and good quality food suitable for the species. It is believed that the development of the atypical and uncommon foreign body in the bird's eye may have been caused by immunodepression resulting from the period of stress it underwent during wildlife trafficking.

Objective. To determine the prevalence of dermatological, ear and ophthalmological alterations clinically suspected to be caused by fungi and to analyze their occurrence demographically. Materials and methods. We carried out a retrospective study in a clinic in Bogota for small animals. We reviewed the medical histories of patients who requested medical appointments due to dermatological, ear and ophtalmological alterations in 2009 and 2010. Results. In the assessed period, the prevalence of dermatological alterations in dogs was of 7.8%, 4.2% of ear alterations and of 3.3% of ophtalmological alterations. The main etiological suspects through clinical diagnosis were: dermatophytes with an incidence of 86.9% among dermatological alterations, Malassezia with an 86.5% of incidence in ear alterations, and Candida with 83.3% of incidence in ophtalmological alterations. Statistical analysis of variables showed no association with symptoms or clinically diagnosed etiological agents, but the categorized evaluation showed associations of races and ages with the etiologies through clinical diagnosis. The diagnosis of fungal etiologies was accomplished in most cases by clinical findings and less frequently by skin scrapings and ear cytology; in none of the cases a mycological culture was done. The feline population showed no dermatological, ear or ophtalmological alterations compatible with a fungal etiology. Conclusion. In canines, the prevalence of dermatological alterations clinically compatible with dermatophytes was of 86.9%; ear alterations associated with Malassezia were of 86.5%; and ophtalmological alterations Candida-suspected were 83.3%. Final diagnoses were accomplished with the help of clinical findings without following standard diagnostic methodologies such as cultivation.
