Free radical scavenging activity of Chinese traditional four substances decoction (FSD) extracts

Abstract: This article examined the interactive effect among herbs extracts in combined use, compared with the effect of individual herbal extracts on 1,1-diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPPH). The Chinese traditional prescription, four substances decoction (FSD) consisted of 25 g of Angelica sinensis (Umbelliferae, AS), 6 g of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Umbelliferae, LCH), 10 g of Paeonia loactiflora Pall. (Paeoniaceae, PCP), and 15 g of Radix rehmanniae preparata (Scrophulariaceae, RRP). Each herb was quantitatively mixed… Show more

“…Synergistic interaction means that the effect of two extracts in combination is greater than the sum of their separate effect at the same dose. Antagonistic interaction means that the effect of the two extracts in combination is less than the sum of the independent effects of the two extracts (Wang, 2012). A strong antagonism in malaria therapy refers to the loss of schizontocidal effect when drugs are used in combination, requiring higher concentrations of the drugs to produce the same effect as the drugs alone while synergism permits the quantity of each drug to be reduced, enhance efficacy and delay resistance (Berenbaum, 1978).…”

“…The IC50 of water and ethanol extract of AD root against ABTS + was 0.20 and 0.13 mg/mL, respectively, (Makchuchit et al 2010). Wang (2012) reported Angelica sinensis showed DPPH radical-scavenging activity with IC50 value of 1.67 mg/mL. Hydroxyl radicals cause injury to surrounding organs and play a vital role in some clinical disorders.…”

“…Various pharmacological properties were reported for rutin including antibacterial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal, antiulcer, anti-mutagenic, vasodilator and immunomodulator (Janbaz et al, 2002). Moreover, rutin has inhibitory effects against membrane lipid peroxidation and generation of ROS like in other plant materials were reported (Lopez-Revuelta et al, 2006;Wang, 2012;Yin et al, 2012) and can suppress adipocyte differentiation from pre-adipocytes (Choi et al, 2006). In addition, rutin can also decrease the level of TBARS and increase the SOD activity suggesting a possible protective role in oxidative stress-mediated diseases (Park et al, 2002).…”
