Fractal antennas and arrays: a review and recent developments

Abstract: In mathematical definition, a fractal is a self-similar subset of Euclidean space whose fractal dimension strictly exceeds its topological dimension which in turn involves a recursive generating methodology that results in contours with infinitely intricate fine structures. Fractal geometry has been used to model complex natural objects such as clouds coastlines, etc., that has space-filling properties. In the past years, several groups of scientists around the globe tried to implement the structure of fractal… Show more

“…The work by Werner et al [15] summarizes various techniques for compact (i.e., miniature) fractal antennas designs. We also refer to the recent survey papers [20,21] for an extensive study of the literature and state of the art summary of fractal antenna research. The reader may also consider exploring the articles [19,20,22,23] for more detailed analysis, various types and applications of fractal antennas available in the literature.…”

“…The top portion consists of a fractal radiating structure and the bottom is with a partial ground. The design equations of fractal radiating structure are motivated from previous reported literatures 19,20 and the mathematical intuition of arrangement of self‐similar elements is based on iterative function system (IFS) 21 . The 50 Ω offset‐feed is asserted for better impedance matching owing to the miniaturized electrical size of fractal radiator (0.05λ0, where λ0 is the lowest operating wavelength).…”

“…1(c). In this proposed antenna design, modified Hilbert fractal [19] curve is introduced in the ground plane. To improve the isolation between antenna elements, a meander line parasitic element is placed inside the Hilbert fractal curve.…”
