Plants of the genus Argyreia have ethnomedicinal importance, and several pharmacological activities are also reported. In this study, the anti-inflammatory activity of different extracts of Argyreia imbricata was evaluated by in vitro and in vivo methods. In both evaluations, standard, Diclofenac sodium was used for comparative evaluation. In this study, extraction of powdered whole plant material was done with different solvents viz., petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol by soxhelation. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity of all the prepared extracts was evaluated by stabilization of human red blood cell (HRBC) membrane in different temperature and tonicity conditions. Among the six different concentrations of four tested extracts, the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts (1000μg/ml) showed significant activity in the in vitro evaluation. They were selected for the in vivo evaluation on the paw oedema induced by carrageenan on Wistar albino rats. Two doses, 200mg.kg-1 and 400mg.kg-1 of the test extracts were subjected to evaluation. Both the tested extracts showed the activity, particularly, the methanol extract in the dose of 400mg.kg-1 showed significant activity. Results of this study strongly supported the anti-inflammatory activity of the tested extracts. Further, studies on toxicity, identification, isolation of the active constituents may give useful results.

Emulgel is one of the convenient and promising topical drug delivery approaches especially for the hydrophobic drugs. The purpose of the study was to prepare emulgel of diclofenac sodium using polymers namely Carbopol-934, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose and sodium carboxy methyl cellulose and studied for their drug release from the gel formulations. The 1% Carbopol-934 formulated gel was found highest drug content (101.72%) than the other formulations. The pH of the formulations ranged from 6.8 to 7.2 and viscosity is from 36,000 to 51,000 cps. Extrudability of carbopol and HPMC gels were excellent than the SodiumCMC gel. In vitro drug release was observed highest (64.91%) for the formulation A2 (1% Carbopol-934) and was improved further on the addition of DMSO as a permeation enhancer. In the same time, 1.0% carbopol-940 also showed a similar release pattern, but the release was lesser (51.47%) and the release of HPMC and sodium CMC gels was much lesser. The study revealed that formulation A2 with 1% Carbopol-934 was observed to be the best formulation having good in vitro release profile, stability and bioavailability among all prepared formulations. Hence, the study brought to a close idea that the emulgel A2 was a successful outcome as a topical anti-inflammatory and analgesic formulation among all.

Background: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease characterized by excessive growth and abnormal differentiation of keratinocytes. Objective: In the present research work, an attempt has been made to formulate and evaluate gel containing cyclosporine, aloe vera and tree tea oil. Methods: The gel was prepared by a conventional method and evaluated for various parameters viz., physical appearance, pH, drug content, viscosity, spreadability and in-vitro diffusion studies, In-vitro skin retention studies and stability studies. The prepared optimized gel was further compared with marketed formulation; all the formulations were good in appearance and had good homogeneity. Results: The optimized gel is shown spreadability co-efficient is 5.8 g cm/sec. The gel has shown 95 ± 0.32% releases in 6 h when evaluated for in-vitro diffusion studies. The biological evaluation of the optimized gel has shown 47.98 % drug activity, indicating good efficacy of the formulation against psoriasis. Conclusion: In conclusion, the prepared optimized gel has shown good spreading co-efficient and stability and can be effective for psoriasis as compared to available gel in the market.
