Objective: The present study was designed with the aim of preliminary phytochemical evaluation and spectral characterization phytochemicals present in the extracts of whole plant Argyreia imbricata (Rox) Sant and Patel. Methods: The whole plant A. imbricata was collected, authenticated, and dried in the shade for powdering in mechanical grinder. The powdered plant material was extracted with Soxhlet apparatus using different solvents, and the dried extract obtained was subjected to preliminary phytochemical evaluation, and then column chromatography separation and the separated fractions were subjected to thin-layer chromatography (TLC) separation. Based on the yield in TLC, the selected compounds were subjected to carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, proton NMR (1H NMR), and mass spectroscopic evaluation. Results: In the preliminary phytochemical evaluation, the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, carbohydrates, saponins, sterols, and terpenoids was found in different extracts. In column chromatography separation, totally 650 fractions were collected, and four compounds were isolated with the help of TLC. Among the four, two compounds were selected for spectral evaluation based on the yield obtained. The selected compounds were identified and named as, 3-ethyl-5-(hydroxymethyl) phenol and methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate with the help of spectral evaluation. Conclusion: The outcome of this study is beneficial, and further investigation in the future directed toward the detailed pharmacological screening of the extracts may give more valuable results.
Plants of the genus Argyreia have ethnomedicinal importance, and several pharmacological activities are also reported. In this study, the anti-inflammatory activity of different extracts of Argyreia imbricata was evaluated by in vitro and in vivo methods. In both evaluations, standard, Diclofenac sodium was used for comparative evaluation. In this study, extraction of powdered whole plant material was done with different solvents viz., petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol by soxhelation. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity of all the prepared extracts was evaluated by stabilization of human red blood cell (HRBC) membrane in different temperature and tonicity conditions. Among the six different concentrations of four tested extracts, the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts (1000μg/ml) showed significant activity in the in vitro evaluation. They were selected for the in vivo evaluation on the paw oedema induced by carrageenan on Wistar albino rats. Two doses, 200mg.kg-1 and 400mg.kg-1 of the test extracts were subjected to evaluation. Both the tested extracts showed the activity, particularly, the methanol extract in the dose of 400mg.kg-1 showed significant activity. Results of this study strongly supported the anti-inflammatory activity of the tested extracts. Further, studies on toxicity, identification, isolation of the active constituents may give useful results.

In this study, phenolic content, anti-oxidant potential of different extracts of Argyreia imbricata was evaluated. Extraction of powdered whole plant material was done with different solvents viz., petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol by soxhelation. The estimation of phenolics in the selected extracts of Argyreia imbricata was done by using a Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The antioxidant potential of different extracts was evaluated by total anti-oxidant capacity, DPPH, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radical scavenging and reducing power assay methods. In the phenolics estimation, the methanol extract showed a significant presence of phenolic content followed by ethyl acetate extract. In case of anti-oxidant activity, the methanol and ethyl acetate extract showed a significant activity based on their concentration. The findings of this study clearly revealed the potential of methanol extract of A. imbricata in phenolic content and anti-oxidant activity. Also, the ethyl acetate extract showed significant results. Further studies on identification, isolation of the active constituents, toxicity evaluations may give useful results.

Talinum fruticosum.L (Talinaceae) is a erect, stout, fleshy, perennial herb. It is used as a leaf vegetable. It contain rich in vitamins including vitamin A and C and minerals such as iron and calcium. The present work highlights phytochemical and antimicrobial studies of Talinum fruticosum. The whole plant were collected from Kasaragod district and subjected to successive solvent extraction. The next step the various extracts of the plant were tried to phytochemical screening. The phytochemical screening shows the presence of flavonoids glycosides carbohydrates and protein. the chloroform and methanolic extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening. The chloroform extract shown the activity against gram positive organism. The phytoconstituents like flavonoids, glycosides are responsible for this activity. The phytochemical studies gave confirmation of the above said result.
