Flavonoid glycosides from Byrsocarpus coccineus leaves. Schum and Thonn (Connaraceae)

Abstract: The bioactive ethyl acetate and N-butanol soluble parts of an ethanolic extract of Byrsocarpus coccineus leaves was subjected to column chromatography over silica gel G (60 -120µ) and repeated purification of the flavonoid rich fraction over sephadex LH-20 eluted with methanol led to the isolation of three flavonoid glycosides identified as quercetin 3-O-α-arabinoside (I), quercetin(II) and quercetin 3-β-D-glucoside. Their structures were elucidated by 1 H and 13 C-NMR data and are reported here for the first … Show more

“…Quercetin and quercetin-3-O-α-arabinofuranoside were previously isolated from the Connaraceae family species Byrsocarpus coccineus (Ahamadu et al, 2007), while hyperin was previously isolated in the Rourea microphylla species (Jiang et al, 1990). However, this is the first time these have been isolated in the R. induta species.…”

“…Concerning the amount of flavonoids, a higher content was determined in BS HWE than in BS-EAc f . That could be explained by the presence of some glycoside-bound flavonoids in the crude extract which were not soluble in ethyl acetate (Ahmadu, Hassan, Abubakar, & Akpulu, 2007). Indeed, compounds such as quercetin glycoside, kaempferol glycoside, dihydroquercetin-3 0 -O-b-D-glucopyranoside and isorhamnetin-3-O-(6 00 -O-acetyl)-b-D-glucopyranoside have been found in barks, needles and cones of the Picea spp.…”
