Findings on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant function in hypertensive complications of pregnancy

Abstract: Objective To assess lipid peroxidation and antioxidant function in hypertensive complications of pregnancy. Design Cross sectional study comparing pre‐eclamptic and control patients. Setting Tampere University Hospital, Finland. Subjects Twenty healthy women with normal, uncomplicated pregnancy; 23 women with severe pre‐eclampsia; 20 women with mild pre‐eclampsia; and 13 women with pregnancy‐induced hypertension. Main outcome measures Conjugated dienes; tiobarbituric acid—reactive… Show more

“…Similar changes have been reported in plasma [15] and neutrophils in hypertensive patients [25]. Though no change in the plasma ascorbic acid level was observed, the reduction in GSH and SOD in the hemolysate suggests that the red blood cell antioxidant system is altered, which disorder may eventually affect membrane functions.…”

“…The induction of lipid peroxidation is considered to be important in the etiology of many pathogenic diseases [13,14]. An elevated level lipid peroxides is reported in hypertensives [15] and in renal stone formation [16]. In the present study, we investigated the role of antioxidants and urinary stone risk parameters in hypertensive patients.…”

“…Serum lipids increase significantly during pregnancy and are further elevated two fold during PIH (4,5,6). Several studies have shown that lipid peroxides like malondialdehyde (MDA) are significantly elevated in mild and severe PIH (7,8,9).…”

“…Pregnancy is associated with physiological hyperlipidemia but in PIH they increase two fold (5,6). Abnormal lipoproteins levels are responsible for damage to endothelium that leads to high blood pressure, and proteinuria; these are important signs of PIH (7).…”
