Figures of Crisis: The Delineation of (Un)Deserving Refugees in the German Media

Abstract: This paper examines how borders are discursively reproduced in representations of the 'refugee crisis' in the German media. Based on an extensive content and discourse analysis of German press representations in 2015 and 2016, we argue that the discourse of crisis obscures the reasons for migration and instead shifts the focus to the advantages and disadvantages that refugees are assumed to bring to their host country. More specifically, we contend that press discourses construct a figure of the (un)deserving … Show more

“…In the aftermath of these events, the rhetoric of the newspapers moves towards a focus on an apparently unassailable cultural difference between refugees and their European hosts. While such narratives do, as we note above, appear throughout the sample period, after Cologne the representations of cultural difference become much more commonplace and accepted, and tend to centre mainly on gender roles and gender ideologies, with 'Europe' portrayed as a 'modern' space of gender equality and the culture of the refugees derided as innately misogynist and, therefore, 'backwards' (see Holzberg et al, 2018 for similar findings from Germany).…”

“…Moreover, the securitarian logic characterizes asylum seekers as an uncontrollable, immoral and barbaric mass of people wanting to enter the European continent (Greussing and Boomgaarden 2017). Adopting this perspective is expected to foster support for restrictive policies, as this frame is closely linked to the introduction of higher surveillance, more border controls and stricter immigration legislations to manage the risk that refugees pose to internal security (Holzberg et al 2018;Ibrahim 2005). To operationalize this frame, we study feelings of unsafety, as the existence of a relationship with asylum policy preferences would illustrate that perceptions of unsafety are partly attributable to fear of violence and criminal activities from refugees or asylum seekers (Rustenbach 2010).…”

“…RAS are most often constructed within discourses of securitization, economization, and victimization, embodying mostly negative attitudes [14]- [18]. The victimization frame can be problematic when RAS are depicted as helpless sufferers who are wholly reliant on external aid [19], by implying that they are burdens.…”
