Refugees as/at risk: The gendered and racialized underpinnings of securitization in British media narratives

Abstract: It is well established in the literature that migration has become increasingly securitized. In this article, we examine the racialized and gendered grids of intelligibility that make securitizing moves possible in the migration context. Specifically, we argue that the securitization of migration during the so-called EU refugee crisis comes into being through intertwined and mutually dependent representations of racialized, masculinized threat and racialized, feminized vulnerability, which are woven into the s… Show more

“…The discourse on refugees has additional layers. During the so-called refugee crisis in 2015, the emphasis in the discourse shifted from refugees 'at risk' towards refugees 'as risk' (Gray & Franck, 2019). Simultaneously, European countries' mainstream political movements and parties increasingly endorsed anti-immigration rhetoric and a harsher stance towards refugees (Bauböck & Tripkovic, 2017;Krzyżanowski et al, 2018).…”

“…Eijberts and Ghorashi (2017) term this linguistic component of the paradox as the 'doubleness' of Dutch language acquisition because it acts as a source for both inclusion and exclusion. Refugees are exposed to additional layers of discourse, which shifted from refugees 'at risk' towards refugees 'as risk' (Gray & Franck, 2019) during the so-called refugee crisis in 2015, as we describe in the next section. This makes it even more important to examine the impact of the dominant discourse on refugees' social integration and (non-)belonging.…”
