Feeding site of the spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) on sugarcane

Abstract: The sugarcane spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) is a pest of mechanically-harvested sugarcane in Brazil, when trash burning is not performed. To better understand the differences in feeding behavior of adults and nymphs of this pest and the subsequent disorders that arise, stylet penetration through fixation, staining and sectioning was investigated. Nymphs cause a "physiological disorder" damaging the tracheary system of the roots, slowing or preventing water and nutrient flow, w… Show more

“…Previous studies have shown that M. fimbriolata nymphs cause massive damage in sugarcane (Dinardo-Miranda et al, 2003;Garcia et al, 2006). Nymphs suck water and nutrients from the root xylem and phloem (Garcia et al, 2007), which causes plants to dehydrate and become nutrient deficient, while adults suck sap from leaves, injecting saliva to facilitate digestion. Reductions in stalk yield may be significant for most sugarcane genotypes, mainly in the middle and late-season harvests (Dinardo-Miranda et al, 1999), after a dry season.…”

“…The main changes caused by straw on the soil surface are the following: greater efficiency in the control of erosion and increase of the organic matter content, macro and microfauna, improving the soil structure, alteration in the incidence of light on the surface; increased infiltration of water into the soil; decrease in thermal amplitude and evaporation, especially in the superficial layers (INMAN-BAMBER;SMITH, 2004;GARCIA et al, 2007;CHRISTOFFOLETI et al, 2007;CAVENAGHI et al, 2007;GUIMARÃES et al, 2008;TAVARES et al, 2010;COSTA et al, 2014;PAREDES JUNIOR et al, 2015;VALIM et al, 2016).…”
