Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To analyze the risk factors associated with neonatal deaths among children with low birth weight. METHODS:A cohort study was carried out on live births weighing between 500 g and 2,499 g from single pregnancies without anencephaly in Recife RESULTS:After adjusting the variables through multivariate logistic regression, the factors from the distal level that remained signifi cantly associated with neonatal death were: cohabitation by the parents, number of live births and type of maternity hospital. … Show more

“…14,22 There was found an association between Apgar scores and neonatal mortality, especially for 5-minute Apgar scores, which corroborates studies conducted in São Paulo, 13 Montes Claros 14 and Recife. 18 Unlike most Brazilian studies 22,24 who found scores <7 as predictive of increased risk of death, the present study showed that Apgar scores ≤8 indicated more vulnerable newborns.…”

“…25 Birth weight and prematurity are major risk factors for neonatal mortality. 3,7,11,18 In the present study, there was found an inverse relationship between birth weight and neonatal death, consistent with other studies conducted in Pelotas (Southern Brazil), São Paulo (Southeastern Brazil), and Recife (Northeastern Brazil). 3,12,22 Pre-term newborns were almost twice as likely to die in the neonatal period compared with full-term infants, as reported in a study conducted in São Paulo.…”
