Show more

“…We believe that this finding could be influenced by some characteristics of the hospital where the study was developed, as the fact of it being a referral center in fetal medicine. This can also be verified through the total number of children who was born with congenital anomalies in general, that was higher than that described in literature (2-3%; Nicola, Cernach, Perez, & Brunoni, 2010).…”

“…In the majority of cases, the etiology of the congenital anomalies remains unknown. Those of genetic origin have been investigated more and the chromosomes and malformations with Mendelian inheritance have been covered [1,6]. Those dependent on environmental factors or gene-environment interactions are more difficult to recognize because cases caused by teratogens are still poorly studied, especially in developing countries such as Brazil [1,2,6].…”

Those dependent on environmental factors or gene-environment interactions are more difficult to recognize because cases caused by teratogens are still poorly studied, especially in developing countries such as Brazil [1,2,6]. Some studies in Brazil show that the estimated frequency of congenital anomalies is 2% to 3% of live births [2,[6][7][8].…”
