The aim of this study is to present the benefits and risks associated with the consumption of black pepper and cinnamon, which are very popular spices in Poland. The article presents the current state of knowledge about health properties and possible dangers, such as liver damage, associated with their consumption. The experimental part presents the results of the research on the antioxidant properties against the DPPH radical, which was 80.85 ± 3.84–85.42 ± 2.34% for black pepper, and 55.52 ± 7.56–91.87 ± 2.93% for cinnamon. The total content of polyphenols in black pepper was 10.67 ± 1.30–32.13 ± 0.24 mg GAE/g, and in cinnamon 52.34 ± 0.96–94.71 ± 3.34 mg GAE/g. In addition, the content of piperine and pepper oil in black pepper was determined, as well as the content of coumarin in cinnamon. The content of piperine in the black pepper samples was in the range of 3.92 ± 0.35–9.23 ± 0.05%. The tested black pepper samples contained 0.89 ± 0.08–2.19 ± 0.15 mL/100 g d.m. of essential oil. The coumarin content in the cinnamon samples remained in the range of 1027.67 ± 50.36–4012.00 ± 79.57 mg/kg. Taking into account the content of coumarin in the tested cinnamon samples, it should be assumed that the majority of cinnamon available in Polish retail is Cinnamomum cassia (L.) J. Presl.

North Lampung Regency is the main producer of Lampung black pepper, which is generally in the form of a poly-culture system of pepper cultivation. This study aims to study the performance and productivity of the pepper plant which is intercropped with coffee by farmers in North Lampung. This study used a survey method and conducted in North Lampung by taking 2 samples of the sub-districts purposively, namely Abung Barat and Abung Tengah. From each district, 2 villages were selected purposively. Primary data were collected by interviewing 93 sample farmers who were randomly sampled. To deepen the performance of planting, visits and observations of farmers' fields were conducted. The results of this study concluded that: (1) 96% of farmers applied a poly-culture pepper plantation system. Intercropping pepper plantations have a lower pepper plant population but the presence of intercropping can cause land use efficiency to increase by up to 30%;(2) The poly-culture pepper fields are managed less intensively as indicated by the low fertilizer dosage and the high mortality rate of pepper, which reaches 7-10% of plants per year; (3) The productivity of this intercropping system is pepper yield (conversion of SPH 1600 trees / ha) reaching 230-260 kg / ha or based on factual population reaching 155-267 kg/ha, coffee yield 166-221 kg/ha, and yield of Pithecellobium jiringa 24 -28 kg/tree; (4) According to farmers' perceptions, the main constraints faced by farmers (80.2% of farmers) were the attack of pepper foot rot disease, low prices for pepper, and high mortality of pepper trees. Inefficient marketing and low production are the main obstacles in the selling of pepper and they also cause a low bargaining position for farmers in the market. Therefore, this study aims to determine the market behavior activities carried out to determine prices, as well as analyze marketing channels, profits received by participants and efficiency. Samples used in this study were 27 farmers, 4 trading districts, and 3 respondent retailers. The qualitative analysis was used to analyze the pattern of channels, the functions performed by associated agencies and the market behavior of the pepper commodity. Quantitative analysis was also carried out to evaluate the marketing margins, costs incurred by traders, profits received and efficiency. The results show that the selling price of pepper was determined by the merchant, with different payment systems including cash, initial deposit, and balance through oral cooperation in the form of an agreement on a place of sales, followed by the provision of capital to farmers. In the marketing process, 4 patterns of channels were formed, which include local markets and others outside the regency, and their efficiencies were above 50%. These results show that government need to provide pepper markets outside the province to improve the welfare of farmers and ensure they don't depend only on the local marketplace during harvest.
