Facebook group PETCoN (Physical Education Teacher Collaborative Network). An innovative approach to PE teacher in-service training: A self-determination theory perspective

Abstract: The purpose of the study was the evaluation of a teacher in-service training program, namely “PE.T.Co.N.“, an online community of practice via Facebook groups. Drawing from Self-Determination theory (SDT), the program aimed at satisfying teachers’ autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs and facilitating their autonomous motivation. Pre-post measurements showed significant improvements in key variables that can determine training success. Preliminary quantitative group insights supported by qualitative data… Show more

“…In addition to formal theory development, SDT has been applied to many domains, including health and medicine [38,39], learning [40,41], and virtual environments [36,37,42]. A study in [39] applied self-determination theory to test the influence of autonomous and controlled motivations on the prediction of health-related behaviors.…”

“…The results showed consistent effects of autonomous motivation on intentions and behavior across multiple health-related behaviors. Based on SDT, an online teacher community of practice was designed to facilitate teacher's autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs and to support autonomous motivation [42]. Regarding the life of online communities, SDT was applied to examine the mechanism that supports autonomy, competence, and relatedness in online diabetes communities [38].…”

“…First, one should note the review of research from 2009-2018 that confirms the interest in online education in general [7]. Some authors describe social networks and messengers as a "digital educational network for teaching and learning" [8] and cite data that teachers use such networks for self-education and professional communication with colleagues [9][10][11][12][13]. Students also use social media and messengers for educational purposes, including collaborative work [14][15][16].…”
