Antimicrobial polyamide 11 (PA-11) films containing low-cost, thermally stable and water resistant polymeric biocide polyhexamethylene guanidine dodecylbenzenesulfonate (PHMG-DBS) have been obtained by compression moulding. The structure of the modified PA-11 films containing from 3 to 10 wt% of PHMG-DBS was characterized using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface properties were evaluated both by contact angle and contactless inductive method. The introduction of PHMG-DBS into PA-11 films was found to increase positive surface charge density to 5.5Á10 -11 C/cm 2 for 10 wt% of PHMG-DBS. Antibacterial activity of PA-11/ PHMG-DBS films against both Gram-positive (Escherichia coli) and Gram-negative (Bacillus subtilis) bacteria was demonstrated for films containing from 5 to 7 wt% of polymeric biocide. According to thermal investigations data, PA-11/ PHMG-DBS composite has excellent thermal stability to at least 390°C both in air and in argon atmosphere which indicates on its availability for the melt processing by common methods. It has also been found that polymeric biocide is highly resistant to leaching from PA-11 film.

Vinyl terminated poly hexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized and tested for surface antimicrobial activity. PHMG chains of molecular weight ~2000 were functionalized with vinyl end groups (PHMG–C = C) by reacting the PHMG amino end groups with 1,2‐epoxy‐9‐decene, or glycidyl methacrylate. PHMG–C = C was copolymerized with MMA at 10% w/w ratio to form water insoluble poly(MMA‐co‐PHMG). Films of these copolymers demonstrated strong antimicrobial activity for 3 months against Escherichia coli and heterotrophic plate count bacteria. The synthesized PHMG–MMA copolymers may be used for self‐sterilizing coatings and water decontamination. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Synthesis and characterizations of antifungal polyurethanes with enhanced tensile and shape recovery performances

Benzimidazole as an antifungal agent and poly(acrylic acid) as a hydrophilic group were grafted together onto polyurethane (PU) to synthesis the antifungal PU. Benzimidazole was chosen as a key antifungal agent because of its proven fungal growth control against a wide spectrum of fungi. The hydrophilicity of antifungal PU was notably escalated after the grafting of poly(acrylic acid) based on the water contact angle results, but the melting and glass transition of soft segment in PU did not notably change by the grafting of benzimidazole and poly(acrylic acid). The synthesized antifungal PUs exhibited a sharp increase in the breaking tensile stress and shape recovery due to the slight chemical cross‐linking between PUs. The benzimidazole‐grafted PUs containing the poly(acrylic acid) demonstrated a clear suppression in the growth of a group of fungi. Therefore, the antifungal PUs with enhanced tensile strength and shape recovery capability were successfully synthesized using the combined grafting of benzimidazole and poly(acrylic acid) onto PU.
