Structural, thermal and antibacterial properties of polyamide 11/polymeric biocide polyhexamethylene guanidine dodecylbenzenesulfonate composites

Abstract: Antimicrobial polyamide 11 (PA-11) films containing low-cost, thermally stable and water resistant polymeric biocide polyhexamethylene guanidine dodecylbenzenesulfonate (PHMG-DBS) have been obtained by compression moulding. The structure of the modified PA-11 films containing from 3 to 10 wt% of PHMG-DBS was characterized using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface properties were evaluated both by contact angle and contactless inductive method. The introduction of PHMG-DBS… Show more

“…Poorly water-soluble PHMG salts such as PHMG stearate, PHMG sulfanilate, or PHMG dodecylbenzenesulfonate (PHMG-DBS) have been reported as efficient antimicrobial additives for polycaprolactone [34], polylactide [35], polyamides [36,37] and silicones [38]. PHMG-DBS was found to have sufficient thermal stability to be melt processed with PA-11 and PA-12 resins by conventional methods [36,37]. PA-11 films containing 5–7 wt% of PHMG-DBS showed a high activity against E. coli , as well as an excellent resistance against leaching of the polymeric biocide [37].…”

“…Cationic groups are the most widely employed as it is well known that they interact with the negatively charged bacterial membrane. In particular, functionalities such as N -halamines [ 194 , 195 , 196 ], PEIs [ 197 ], phosphonium salts [ 198 , 199 ], quaternary ammonium salts [ 200 , 201 ], and guanidines [ 202 , 203 , 204 ] are frequently used.…”

“…Polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) is a potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial that is thermally stable up to a temperature of 390 °C (both in air and argon atmosphere), which makes it a suitable candidate for thermal-initiating reactions. [21] PHMG is also commercially available at a low cost and has been widely used in water treatment, wound care, and various other consumer applications. [22] Its toxicity to humans is low, and its microbicidal effects are due to its ability to disrupt the microbial cell membrane, which is less likely to trigger drug resistance.…”
