Cationic antimicrobial copolymer poly (methylmethacrylate‐co‐PHMG) decontaminates water

Abstract: Vinyl terminated poly hexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized and tested for surface antimicrobial activity. PHMG chains of molecular weight ~2000 were functionalized with vinyl end groups (PHMG–C = C) by reacting the PHMG amino end groups with 1,2‐epoxy‐9‐decene, or glycidyl methacrylate. PHMG–C = C was copolymerized with MMA at 10% w/w ratio to form water insoluble poly(MMA‐co‐PHMG). Films of these copolymers demonstrated strong antimicrobial activity for… Show more

“…We explain this by the fact that TBD catalyst is covalently connected to the network during the polymerization. It is well-known that -NH- groups of TBD can react with epoxy, in addition, the strong basicity of the guanidine group is not only helpful to the opening of epoxy groups, but also can act with acid 48 , 49 .…”

“…The derivatives of guanidine monomers such as polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) and polyhexamethylene biguanidine (PHMB) are applied in interfacial polymerisation reactions with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the polysulfone surface, which leads to the formation of ultrafiltration membranes, exhibiting antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli [ 39 ]. Copolymers MMA and PHMG—i.e., poly(MMA-co-PHMG)—are efficient in fighting tap water E. coli and heterotrophic-plate-count bacteria [ 40 ]. Besides the abovementioned synthetic polymers containing nitrogen atoms, the linear quaternary ammonium polymers (QACs) constitute an important group of antibacterial compounds.…”

“…[18][19][20] Especially, polyhexamethylguanidine (PHMG) has been recognized as a kind of macromolecular antibacterial agent with broad spectrum sterilization effect, high stability, and low-cost. [21] Obviously, PHMG and its derivatives have been widely applied in various fields, such as food processing [22] and transportation, [23] farm disinfection, [24] sewage purification, [25] and so on. The cationic groups of PHMG could adsorb to the surface of bacteria, so as to inhibit the division function of bacteria and viruses, so that bacteria and viruses lose reproductive ability.…”
