Extracts of black bean peel and pomegranate peel ameliorate oxidative stress-induced hyperglycemia in mice

Abstract: Oxidative stress has a central role in the progression of diabetes mellitus (DM), which can directly result in the injury of islet β cells and consequent hyperglycemia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible protective effects of black bean peel extract (BBPE), pomegranate peel extract (PPE) and a combination of the two (PPE + BBPE) on streptozotocin-induced DM mice. Oxidative stress was assessed by the levels of total antioxidative capability and glutathione in the serum. Fasting blood gluc… Show more

“…Advanced research on PoP and its extracts primarily focuses upon suppression of oxidative stress in tissues and food systems (Bopitiya and Madhujith ; Wang et al . ). Likewise, numerous studies have shown that PoPx to exhibit ameliorative effects against oxidative stress, injuries in pancreatic islets, liver, skeletal muscles, colon mucosa tissues, cerebral ischemia induced brain injuries and platelet aggregation (Ahmed et al .…”

“…5 Oxidative stress due to autooxidation of glucose and decreased antioxidant defense is believed to play a role in the onset of DM and its complications. 6 The small intestine is unique in its variety of cell types including enterocytes (small intestinal epithelial cells), goblet cells (for mucus secre tion), enteroendocrine cells (for hormone secretion) and Paneth cells which are stem cells differentiate to form enterocytes. 7 Paneth cells located at the baseof the Lieberkühn glands 8 and they synthesize substances with antimicrobial properties such as α-defensins, lysozyme and phospholipase A 2 in response to different stimuli.…”
