Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Urease Inhibitory Activities of Phenolics-Rich Pomegranate Peel Hydro-Alcoholic Extracts

Abstract: This study was aimed at exploring biological properties of PoP for their potential use as an ingredient of choice in nutraceuticals and ethnic drug formulations. Pomegranate peel extracts (PoPx), derived from hydro-alcoholic extracts were evaluated for antioxidant, antimicrobial and potential antiulcer properties. Higher levels of total phenolics (427.19 mgGAE/g of extracts) recovered from hydro-alcoholic extracts exhibited significant (P < 0.05) ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-pic… Show more

“…Our results are in line with the results obtained by Dahham, Ali, Tabassum, and Khan (2010), who studied antimicrobial effect of pomegranate peel extracts against B. cereus, E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa considering their inhibition halos. Ismail et al (2016) also obtained inhibitory effects of pomegranate peel extracts against B. subtilis, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E.coli, S. typhimurium and A. niger. However, in our study the extraction methodologies used had no significant impact on the inhibition halos increase.…”

“…In vitro, methanolic extract of pomegranate peel caused inhibitory effect to the linear growth of six economically important fungal phytopathogens isolated from different hosts including: Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum dematium, Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, Phoma spp., and Rhizoctonia solani (Mohamad et al, 2015). Potent inhibitory effects of PoP extracts were observed against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Aspergillus niger and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was recorded between 0.25-0.89 mg/mL (Ismail et al, 2016).…”

“…Incorporation of PoP and its extracts in various food preparations as natural preservatives and nutraceuticals have been widely reported in the literature. In addition to their ability to act as a natural solution to oxidative damages in fat based food systems, PoPx inhibits microbiological pathogenesis and improves nutraceutical profile of the finished goods (Naveena et al 2008;Kanatt et al 2010;Akhtar et al 2015;Ismail et al 2016).…”
