The world of science is growing at an unprecedented speed with more and more scholarly papers produced each year. The scientific landscape is constantly changing as research specialties evolve, merge or become obsolete. It is difficult for researchers, research managers and the public alike to keep abreast with these changes and maintain a true and fair overview of the world of science. Such an overview is necessary to stimulate scientific progress, to maintain flexible and responsive research organizations, and to secure collaboration and knowledge exchange between different research specialties and the wider community. Although science mapping is applied to a wide range of scientific areas, examples of their practical use are sparse. This paper demonstrates how to use a topical, scientific reference maps to understand and navigate in dynamic research landscapes and how to utilize science maps to facilitate strategic thinking. In this study, the research domain of biology at Aarhus University serves as an example. All scientific papers authored by the current, permanent staff were extracted (6,830 in total). These papers were used to create a semantic cognitive map of the research field using a co-word analysis based on keywords and keyword phrases. A workflow was written in Python for easy and fast retrieval of information for topic maps (including tokens from keywords section and title) to generate intelligible research maps, and to visualize the distribution of topics (keywords), papers, journal categories, individual researchers and research groups on any scale. The resulting projections revealed new insights into the structure of the research community and made it possible to compare researchers or research groups to describe differences and similarities, to find scientific overlaps or gaps, and to understand how they relate and connect. Science mapping can be used for intended (top-down) as well as emergent (bottom-up) strategy development. The paper concludes that science maps provide alternative views of the intricate structures of science to supplement traditional bibliometric information. These insights may help strengthen strategic thinking and boost creativity and thus contribute to the progress of science.

A emergência da questão ambiental na década de 1960 levou à compreensão dos efeitos globais das atividades humanas sobre o sistema terrestre, conduzindo os olhares para a questão dos modelos de desenvolvimento, em suas múltiplas dimensões. É nesse cenário que surgem as ciências ambientais, em busca de abordagens menos fragmentadas e mais integrativas, com um caráter marcadamente interdisciplinar. No Brasil, esse campo passa a se constituir na década de 1980, chegando ao seu grau mais alto de institucionalização em 2011, por meio da criação de uma nova área de avaliação no âmbito da pós-graduação. Neste artigo, apresentam-se resultados da pesquisa que teve como objetivo identificar as comunidades temáticas que constituem a agenda de pesquisa sobre a questão do desenvolvimento no âmbito das ciências ambientais brasileiras, voltando o foco da análise para a produção da pós-graduação, particularmente as teses e dissertações entre 1987 e 2017. Para tanto, utilizou-se a bibliometria relacional e a análise de redes de palavras-chave dos trabalhos como metodologia, a partir da identificação de 1061 teses e dissertações que utilizaram o termo desenvolvimento entre suas palavras-chave. Como resultados, identificou-se 41% das teses e dissertações no Nordeste, marcando uma forte concentração regional. Identificaram-se 10 comunidades temáticas, sendo as maiores as que tratam de políticas públicas, com recortes espacializados, com destaque para o rural e ênfase na dimensão institucional, e a com foco no turismo como agente do desenvolvimento local. As outras comunidades identificadas foram economia–tecnologia, socioambiental–impacto, agricultura–familiar, indicador–água, saúde–humano, resíduo–sólido, pesca–indústria e crédito–limpo. Aponta-se, assim, para a diversidade temática como uma importante componente do debate sobre desenvolvimento nas ciências ambientais, ao mesmo tempo em que se destaca a potência da bibliometria relacional e da análise de redes para compreensão da produção da ciência a partir de grandes repositórios documentais.

Bibliometrics have become commonplace and widely used by authors and journals to monitor, to evaluate and to identify their readership in an ever-increasingly publishing scientific world. With this contribution, we aim to investigate the semantic proximities and evolution of the papers published in the online journal Cybergeo since its creation in 1996. We propose a dedicated interactive application that compares three strategies for building semantic networks, using keywords (self-declared themes), citations (areas of research using the papers published in Cybergeo) and full-texts (themes derived from the words used in writing). We interpret these networks and semantic proximities with respect to their temporal evolution as well as to their spatial expressions, by considering the countries studied in the papers under inquiry (Cybergeo being a journal of geography, most articles refer to a well-defined spatial envelope). Finally, we compare the three methods and conclude that their complementarity can help go beyond simple statistics to better understand the epistemological evolution of a scientific community and the readership target of the journal.
