A cluster analysis of the business models of Spanish journals

This article provides an analysis of Spanish journals' business models. It presents an integrated approach to the concept of a business model, looking at (1) economics and finances, (2) operation, and (3) the strategic dimensions of the publishing activities. It is based on a cluster analysis of 327 journals that responded to a survey carried out between November 2012 and March 2013. Our findings revealed four business models that differed mostly in the economic and financial dimensions. The greatest difference between the clusters was in the distribution of expenses, and two different operational patterns were revealed by the allocation of staff and volunteer resources. The main barrier to open access was perceived to be financial limitations by three clusters and organizational structure by one cluster, with the subscription-based journals least likely to be open access or to be tempted to become open access. Resumen En este artículo se evalúan varias dimensiones estratégicas de ocho revistas iberoamericanas de Educación Física/Ciencias del Deporte (cinco brasileñas, dos españolas y una portuguesa) presentes en la nueva plataforma Web of Science. Con ello se pretende re exionar sobre los desafíos próximos a los que deben enfrentarse y también ser útil en la mejora de la calidad de estas publicaciones. El análisis se realizó sobre los fascículos editados en 2012 y a partir de la información disponible en sus versiones electrónicas. Los resultados muestran que, en general, la transparencia y la gestión del proceso editorial son mejorables y que la internacionalización y la visibilidad de las revistas son todavía débiles.Abstract In this article, several strategic dimensions from eight Ibero-American journals of Physical Education/Sports Sciences ( ve Brazilian, two Spanish and one Portuguese) included in the new Web of Science platform are evaluated. It is aimed to both re ect on the coming challenges they will face and be useful in improving the quality of these publications. The analysis was performed from the 2012 published issues and from the information available in their websites. The results show that, overall, transparency and management of the editorial process are improvable and that their internationalization and visibility are still weak.

Se presentan los resultados del análisis de la difusión y circulación del número de revistas españolas en diferentes bases de datos, nacionales e internacionales. Para ello se realiza un estudio de las revistas que contienen las principales bases de datos bibliográficas hasta el año 2017. El aumento de la presencia de revistas españolas de psicología en las diferentes bases de datos es un indicador que determina el crecimiento y la madurez de esta disciplina y aporta una visión interesante de la actividad científica en psicología y su situación en el contexto internacional. Se muestra que las políticas de estado y las campañas de posicionamiento de universidades, asociaciones y colegios juegan un papel clave en la internacionalización y posicionamiento. We present the results of the analysis of the dissemination and circulation of the number of Spanish journals in different national and international databases. This is a study of the journals that contain the main bibliographic databases until the year 2017. The increase of the presence of Spanish psychology journals in the different databases is an indicator that determines the growth and maturity of this discipline and provides an interesting view of the scientific activity in psychology and its situation in the international context. It shows that state policies and positioning campaigns of universities, associations and schools play a key role in the internationalization and positioning.
