Evaluation of Water and Sediment Quality in Open Channels that Receive Effluent from Johkasou Facilities

Abstract: Treated water disposed from an alternative wastewater treatment system, named johkasou, contains several contaminants that may affect the quality of the local water environment. Thus, the evaluation of water quality, along with sediment content, may provide quantitative information about the effects of johkasou effluent in the open channels. Here, the physicochemical and microbial parameters were comprehensively examined in both the water and sediments of a johkasou drainage channel and open channels. Througho… Show more

“…It has been implemented as alternative treatment system in the rural areas of Japan, in addition from other areas that do not have wastewater treatment plants [4,5]. The treatments in anaerobic filter tank are to separate solid matter, store sludge, and degrade organic matter by anaerobic microorganisms.…”

“…The faecal bacteria coliform (FIB) is one of the major indicator of pollution from domestic household. They presence in high concentrations of TC and FC in the surface water might reveal the existence of virus and pathogenic bacteria that can induce health risk by waterborne disease transmission [7]. During dry season and low water level, the FIB increased due to the low dilution factor and at this appropriate condition, the FIB number may duplicate particularly in the sediment phase [8].…”

“…Johkasou is one of the methods to effectively treat domestic wastewater before it flows into the drainage of the residential area. However, the effluent from Johkasou has still been reported as one of the source of pollutions in coastal areas such as lakes and bays 5), 6) .…”
