Evaluation of mean platelet volume (MPV) levels in patients with synovitis associated with knee osteoarthritis

Abstract: Platelet count, C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophile countings are markers those reflect the inflammatory response. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a simple indicator of platelet size and has been known to be a marker of platelet activity. Some platelet markers, including MPV, have been investigated to have relation with inflammation. MPV is inversely correlated with inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, as shown in the previous studies. In this study,… Show more

“…Moreover, several studies have shown that elevated MPV is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral artery disease [18][19][20]. As well as some evidence can be found through the literature about the association between the rheumatic diseases can also either decrease or increase MPV levels [12,21,22]. There are a few studies about MPV levels in brucellosis [23,24].…”

“…10 It has been suggested that the changes of MPV in many inflammatory diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases , 11,12 acute pancreatitis, 13,14 acute and chronic cholecystitis , 15 ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis, 16 and osteoarthritis with synovitis 17 are noteworthy.…”

“…Furthermore, MPV value was higher in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients compared to controls [16,17]. Therefore, it would be interesting if the authors [1] provided information about hepatic function tests and respiratory conditions of these patients.…”

“…We read with great interest the article''Evaluation of mean platelet volume (MPV) levels in patients with synovitis associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA)'' by Balbaloglu et al [1]. This study assessed the MPV, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and Creactive protein (CRP) levels in patients with synovitis associated with knee OA.…”
