Energy-Neutral Operation Based on Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer for Wireless Powered Sensor Networks

Abstract: For energy-neutral operation (ENO) of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), we apply a wireless powered communication network (WPCN) to a WSN with a hierarchical structure. In this hierarchical wireless powered sensor network (WPSN), sensor nodes with high harvesting energies and good link budgets have energy remaining after sending their data to the cluster head (CH), whereas the CH suffers from energy scarcity. Thus, we apply the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technique to the consid… Show more

“…The authors in ref. [35] consider a hierarchical architecture using SWIPT to provide the so called energy neutral operation (ENO), where the nodes can perpetually work if the energy consumption is less than the harvested energy. In the proposed SWIPT structure, a Hybrid Access Point powers the wireless sensor nodes by the RF waves sent and the sensor nodes, organized in clusters, transmit the sensing data to the Cluster Head (CH).…”

“…The cited works [31,35,36] consider SWIPT method to manage the end-to-end routes selection in multi-hop energy constrained wireless network while our paper mainly addresses the use of SWIPT technique to create a new OF for the RPL protocol. This new OF based on SWIPT provides an optimized route selection to forward data towards the root node balancing the remaining energy among the nodes thanks to the recharge effect.…”

“…The multi-user cluster-based WPCN and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) with user cooperation are studied in [15] and [16], respectively, for the case of singlecluster. In [15], all single-antenna users transmit their signals to the single-antenna cluster head (CH) and then the CH transmits the signals of the users as well as its own signal to the multiple antennas HAP via time-division-multiple-access (TDMA) protocol.…”

“…The transmit time allocations and EB matrix are designed to improve the throughput fairness among the users. The problem of maximizing the sensing data rate in a cluster is considered in [16] for a scenario with singleantenna HAP, CH and cluster members 1 .…”
