Endovenous Laser Ablation (980nm) of the Small Saphenous Vein in a Series of 147 Limbs with a 3-Year Follow-up

Abstract: EVLA of the incompetent SSV with a 980-nm diode laser appears to be an extremely safe technique. After successful treatment, there is a very low rate of re-canalisation of the SSV. Obliteration of the SSV was confirmed at 1-, 2- and 3-year follow-up; this study suggests that this procedure will provide a lasting result.

“…In the present study, the incidence of heat thrombosis was 7(11.3%) cases; only 2(3.2%) of these 7 cases were graded as 4; however, in the studies of Theivacumar [19], Groenendael [23], D' Othée [27], Doganci [22], Carradice [28], and Desmyttere [29] zero incidences of thrombosis was reported. Additionally, Boersma et al documented an overall incidence of 0%-1.2% [25], i.e., significantly less than that in the present study.…”

“…Similarly, the present study was smaller than a study on 84 patients (96 limbs) for a one-year duration by S.W. Park et al [15,16]. On the other hand, our sample size of patients and duration were similar to those of a study by Sadick et al, who followed up on 30 patients for 24 months [17].…”

“…Our analysis of the complications of surgical treatment for varicose veins showed that paresthesia was reported in 13% of the patients treated at the 3-to-5-day follow-up, falling to 9.3% at 30 days’ follow-up. Desmyttère et al 14 published a study in which they followed 128 patients who underwent thermoablation of the small saphenous for 3 years, reporting that 40% of the sample exhibited paresthesia at 15 days’ follow-up, but that this symptom was not reported after 30 days’ follow-up.…”
