The material used for interim prostheses fabrication must present excellent physical properties for greater longevity in the face of environmental conditions, which can occur in the oral cavity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a photopolymerized glaze on the physical and mechanical properties of polymers used for the fabrication of interim prostheses, before and after thermocycling and immersion in staining solutions. One hundred samples of composite and acrylic resins were fabricated: Dencor chemically activated acrylic resin (CAAR) (n=20) and heat-polymerized acrylic resin (HPAR) (n=20), Charisma (n=20), Structur (n=20), and Protemp (n=20). A mechanical polishing was performed on half of the samples, and a chemical polishing was performed on the remaining samples. Subsequently, all samples were submitted to thermocycling and immersion in coffee staining solution for 21days. Analysis of color and microhardness, as well as atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) were performed. The data were submitted to repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Tukey test (α=0.05) and the Student t-test (α=0.05). It was verified that the glaze decreased the chromatic alteration values, and increased the microhardness values of the samples, with the exception of the Charisma resin. The samples that did not receive chemical polishing had the greatest number of surface irregularities. This study concluded that the groups with glaze presented less color alteration. In addition, Charisma and Structur resins exhibited the greatest chromatic stability. As to the microhardness, the values were greater when the samples were treated with the glaze, with the exception of the Charisma group.

A female patient, twenty years old complaining about the esthetic involving her left maxillary central incisor tooth sought for restorative treatment. A poor marginal adaptation and mismatching color of the resin composite class IV restoration was observed, which was placed AbstractThis clinical report elucidates both uses of direct and indirect restoration techniques, in which a failure of the direct resin restoration after one year by tooth discoloration relapse was detected, and a ceramic veneer restoration was the final elected treatment. A poor marginal adaptation and mismatching color of a class IV resin composite restoration was observed, which was placed due to a traumatic dental injury, in which part of the enamel and dentin was lost but without tooth vitality impairment. Tooth bleaching was performed combining home and in-office bleaching techniques, followed by restoration replacement with resin composite in order to improve the dental esthetic. After one year of follow up, it was observed that the restored tooth was darker and the resin shade mismatch the tooth color, showing an evident restoration margin. In attempt to achieve a long lasting treatment, substitution of the direct composite by an indirect restoration was selected, using a unit ceramic veneer restoration, and followed up for four years. Conservative approaches should be the choice treatment in restorative dentistry, however the re-incidence of discolored tooth or the restoration material degradation must be taken into consideration before indicating a direct or indirect restoration.

SummaryAdhesive dentistry has undergone great progress in the last decades. In light of minimal-invasive dentistry, this new approach promotes a more conservative cavity design, which relies on the effectiveness of current enamel-dentine adhesives. Adhesive dentistry began in 1955 by Buonocore on the benefits of acid etching. With changing technologies, dental adhesives have evolved from noetch to total-etch (4 th and 5 th generation) to self-etch (6 th , 7 th and 8 th generation) systems. Currently, bonding to dental substrates is based on three different strategies: 1) etch-and-rinse, 2) self-etch and 3) resin-modified glass-ionomer approach as possessing the unique properties of self-adherence to the tooth tissue. More recently, a new family of dentin adhesives has been introduced (universal or multi-mode adhesives), which may be used either as etch-and-rinse or as self-etch adhesives. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on the current knowledge for each adhesive system according to their classification that have been advocated by many authorities in most operative/restorative procedures. As noted by several valuable studies that have contributed to understanding of bonding to various substrates helps clinicians to choose the appropriate dentin bonding agents for optimal clinical outcomes.
