Enabling Open Innovation Process Through Interactive Methods: Scenarios and Group Decision Support Systems

Abstract: To be able to utilise opportunities in a radically changing business environment, various organisations are transforming their practices towards open innovation processes. Openness does not, however, mean any kind of looseness in innovation management but calls for coordination and facilitation. The challenge for the management in the open innovation process is to find out the appropriate methods and practices for the utilisation of external knowledge resources. One of the first attempts, this study brings two… Show more

“…As market functions for fuzzy customer needs of complex products such as cars require expert knowledge, it leverages an interactive and expert search method. An interactive approach creates the required knowledge-sharing context (Bergman, 2009). It subsumes two major phases: (1) source selection and (2) ideation; throughout each phase, analogical processes and functional analysis change the level of abstraction of the search and problem solving activities.…”

“…For instance an open information infrastructure proposed by Kuschel (2008), network boards suggested by Wincent et al (2009) or treating project management under the OI paradigm. Cooper's (2008; suggestion to adjust their stage gate model to include the OI paradigm throughout the whole process of new product development, scenarios and GDSS to complement the heuristic scenario development process to support knowledge creation in the OI process (Bergman et al 2009) are also useful suggestions.…”

“…A review of old and recent literature reveals that the reduction of innovation failures and the improvement of the return on funds invested in new product development (NPD) are mainly determined by the capability of these innovations to meet customers' wants and needs (Moore 1982;Davidson 1976;Martin and Bush 2003). In the course of time it has been recognized that the creation of successful innovations requires the compounding of knowledge from various perspectives, including especially the knowledge of customers, as these are most suitable for revealing their wants and needs (Bergman et al 2009;Leonard and Sensiper 1998). Customer knowledge has become indispensable for developing innovative products (Su et al 2006).…”
