Background:Surface electromyography identifies changes in the electrical potential of the muscles during each contraction. The percentage of use is a way to treat values enabling comparison between groups. Aim:To analyze the electrical activity and the percentage of use of masseter and temporal muscles during chewing in candidates for gastric bypass. Methods:It was used Surface Electromyography Miotool 200,400 (Miotec (r), Porto Alegre/RS, Brazil) integrated with Miograph 2.0 software, involving patients between 20-40 years old. Were included data on electrical activity simultaneously and in pairs of temporal muscle groups and masseter at rest, maximum intercuspation and during the chewing of food previously classified. Results:Were enrolled 39 patients (59 women), mean age 27.1+/-5.7. The percentage of use focused on temporal muscle, in a range of 11-20, female literacy (n=11; 47.82) on the left side and 15 (65.21) on the right-hand side. In the male, nine (56.25) at left and 12 (75.00) on the right-hand side. In masseter, also in the range of 11 to 20, female literacy (n=10; 43.48) on the left side and 11 (47.83) on the right-hand side. In the male, nine (56.25) at left and eight (50.00) on the right-hand side. Conclusion:40-50% of the sample showed electrical activity in muscles (masseter and temporal) with variable values, and after processing into percentage value, facilitating the comparison of load of used electrical activity between the group, as well as usage percentage was obtained of muscle fibers 11-20% values involving, representing a range that is considered as a reference to the group studied. The gender was not a variable.

Speech-language-hearing instruments to assess peripheral facial palsy: an integrative literature review

Purpose: to describe and analyze the clinical instruments that assess peripheral facial palsy through an integrative literature review. Methods: the precepts for this type of review were followed: research question, identification, selection of studies, and critical analysis. The Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Google Scholar, and PubMed databases were accessed to search for fully available articles published in national journals between January 2008 and July 2018. The terms used in the search were “Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences”, “Evaluation”, and “Facial Paralysis”, in both English and Portuguese. The data obtained were organized per author, title, objective, instruments used, description of the instruments, and application procedures used in the articles. Results: out of the total 992 articles found, only 18 met the inclusion criteria of the research. In most of them, there was only the citation of the assessment instruments or considerations about them, without fully describing the application procedures. Conclusion: the study identified publications that indicate the use of clinical and speech-language-hearing assessment instruments. However, further detailing is necessary regarding the assessment procedures to help develop and refine the speech-language-hearing methodologies and techniques.

OBJETIVO: analisar a qualidade de vida em indivíduos com paralisia facial periférica crônica adquirida. MÉTODO: foram selecionados, por meio de triagem, 12 indivíduos com paralisia facial periférica adquirida na fase de sequela, com etiologias de paralisia facial de Bell e Schwannoma após exérese. Foi verificado o grau da paralisia facial periférica adquirida de acordo com House & Brackmann9, além de ter sido realizada entrevista com perguntas fechadas, para verificar se havia interferência da paralisia facial na convivência social de cada indivíduo. O tipo de estudo foi transversal e, os testes utilizados foram o não-paramétrico de Mann-Whitney e o teste exato de Fisher, com o nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: os graus da paralisia facial foram divididos da seguinte forma: I-II (Normal a Disfunção leve), III-IV (Disfunção moderada a moderadamente severa) e V-VI (Disfunção severa a paralisia total). Nas respostas quanto ao prejuízo nas atividades profissionais e pessoais, indivíduos com face normal a disfunção leve por paralisia facial de Bell responderam não ter prejuízo para suas atividades; na disfunção moderada a moderadamente severa todos responderam muito prejuízo e na disfunção severa a paralisia total, um indivíduo respondeu muito prejuízo. Na paralisia facial por Schwannoma no grupo classificado como disfunção leve, todos responderam nenhum prejuízo e na disfunção severa à paralisia total, um indivíduo respondeu muito prejuízo para tais atividades. CONCLUSÃO: a paralisia facial periférica crônica adquirida interferiu na qualidade de vida dos indivíduos com graus considerados mais graves.
