Effects on blood pressure in patients with refractory angina pectoris after enhanced external counterpulsation

Abstract: EECP treatment affects the blood pressure in patients with refractory angina pectoris. The decreased blood pressure may be a result of an improved exercise capacity, an improved endothelial function and vasoreactivity in general.

“…(1) Arterial pressure: flow pulsatility is unique to EECP hemodynamics, in which diastolic aortic pressure is increased by 26%-157%. 13 Its effects on systolic aortic pressure vary in different studies, which report a lowering of systolic pressure by 9-16 mm Hg (1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa). (2) Ventricular function: EECP increases cardiac output by an average of 25%.…”

“…Consequently, ECP improves arterial stiffness [21] and peripheral artery flow-mediated dilatation [22]. Moreover, a 35-h course of ECP improves hypertension [23,24]. These data suggest that the daily acute effect of ECP can cause chronic vasodilation and cardiac afterload reduction.…”

“…However, although in a previous report, EECP may augment cerebral arterial blood flow [7], no evidence was found to support that EECP increased cerebral venous outflow, which requires further investigation. Another possible mechanism is the reduced systemic systolic pressure after EECP [15], which is associated with reduced IOP [16][17][18]. However, further study is also necessary for the correlation, especially long-term correlation, between IOP and blood pressure.…”
