This study aimed to assess the efficacy of BioPlus 2B, a probiotic containing Bacillus licheniformis and B. subtilis and Ferroin solution on growth performance, body composition and haematological parameters in kutum, Rutilus frisii kutum, fry. The fish were fed dry pellets containing various ratios of probiotics and Ferroin for 60 days after absorption of the yolk sac. At the end of the trial, growth indices (final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, daily growth rate, food conversion ratio and condition factor), body composition (crude protein, crude lipid, ash and moisture) and haematological parameters [haematocrit (Hct), haemoglobin (Hb), red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils (NEUTR), lymphocytes (LYM), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) and mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)] were assessed. Regarding body composition, total protein levels were higher, and ash, moisture and lipid levels were lower in fish receiving the probiotic and Ferroin treatments compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Fish receiving diets supplemented with probiotics and Ferroin solution showed significantly better growth than those fed the basal diet (control). RBC, Hct, Hb, MCV, MCH and LYM were all highest in fish fed probiotic (1.6 × 10(9) CFU/g dry pellet) + Ferroin solution (7 mg/kg dry pellet) + dry pellets. These results indicate that the combination of probiotic and Ferroin solution represents an effective dietary supplement for improving carcass quality, growth performance and haematological parameters in kutum fry.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of synbiotic (Biomin IMBO) on haematological (white blood cell (WBC) and red blood cell (RBC) counts, haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, haematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)) and immunological (immunoglobulin (IgM) and lysozyme activity) components of Russian sturgeon, Acipenser guldenstadti. Five experimental treatments and one control group with three replicates were considered. In treatment groups, fish were fed with diet containing 1 (T 1 ), 1.5 (T 2 ), 2 (T 3 ), 2.5 (T 4 ) and 3 (T 5 ) g synbiotic/kg diet. In control group, fish were fed without supplement of synbiotic. Blood sampling for haematological and immunological studies was done at days 20, 40 and 60 after the beginning of the experiment. Based on our results, synbiotic supplement had no significant effects on values Hb, Htc, MCV and MCHC compared to control group (P>0.05). Also, in all experimental treatments, these parameters did not considerable changes during the course of the experiment (P>0.05). The effect of synbiotic supplement on MCH was not significant (P>0.05); however, this value was higher in synbiotic supplement treatments compared to control group. MCH had no significant changes during the period of the experiment in all experimental groups (P>0.05). In all synbiotic treatments, the values of WBC count, neutrophils, monocytes and eosinophils were higher than control group (P<0.05). Only, lymphocytes in synbiotic supplement treatments were lower compared to control group (P<0.05). Also, WBC count showed a decreasing trend during the period of the experiment in all synbiotic supplement groups (P<0.05). Synbiotic supplement increased RBCs compared to control group; however, this was not significant (P>0.05). The values of RBCs in T4 and T5 showed an increasing change over the course of the experiment (P<0.05). The immunological components, i.e. IgM concentration and lysozyme activity, were found to be higher in synbiotic supplement treatments compared to control group (P<0.05). These parameters had no significant changes over the course of the experiment (P>0.05).

The effects of probiotic Primalac on the growth performance, serum biochemical performance, survival and stress resistance of the Caspian roach (Rutilus rutilus) fry (1.29 ± 0.17 g) was investigated in the present study. Four practical diets containing 0 (control), 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15 % probiotic Primalac were used to feed fish. Fish (15 fish/ replicate) were fed on the tested diets at rate of 3 % of body weight for 45 days. Salinity stress test was carried out after 45 days of feeding, in order to determine the effect of Primalac on resistance to salinity stress. Blood samples were obtained in four times after challenge (days 1, 3, 5 and 7) evaluating hematocrit levels. Results showed that final weight, body weight gain and specific growth rate were significantly (P<0.05) increased in treatment groups with Primalac and the highest levels related to fish fed 0.15%. Also, fish fed 0.15 % diet had a significantly highest condition factor compared to the control group and other treatments (P<0.05). Feed conversion ratio was decreased significantly in treatment groups with Primalac (P<0.05). Glucose and cholesterol levels were decreased significantly (P<0.05) in fish fed with diets containing Primalac. In addition, supplementation of Primalac significantly (P<0.05) increased the total protein concentration of probiotic fed groups. On the first day after stress, the hematocrit levels were significantly increased in all groups (P<0.05). The hematocrit levels were decreased in all groups since third day. These results indicate that addition of probiotic Primalac to fish diet exerted positive effects on fish growth and blood biochemical parameters in the Caspian roach.
