Effects of Grape Seed Extract, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E on Ethanol- and Aspirin-Induced Ulcers

Abstract: Effects of GSE and vitamins C and E on aspirin- and ethanol-induced gastric ulcer and associated increases of lipid peroxidation in rats were compared. Two experiments were conducted. Rats were randomized into eight groups: a negative control and seven groups that received aspirin or ethanol for ulcer induction: one positive control (vehicle) and six with VC, VE, or GSE (25 and 250 mg/kg). Ulcer indexes and gastric levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) were quantified. VC, VE, and GSE (25 and 250 mg/kg) decreased as… Show more

“…Therefore, treatment with antioxidants like T3 may provide beneficial effects in attenuating the formation of gastric lesions. Both αTF and T3 reduced gastric lesion index in experimental animals exposed to ulcerogens [209][210][211][212]. Vitamin E possesses antioxidant properties, but T3 was reported to have a higher antioxidant ability compared to TF [213].…”

“…There are many models used to explore the protective effects of vitamin E, including TF and T3, on gastric lesions development. The commonly used models are stress-induced [214], non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)-induced [215], ethanol-induced [211], Helicobacter pylori-induced [216], acid-induced [217], and pyloric ligation-induced [218]. These models induce the development of gastric ulcer via different mechanisms.…”

“…Proanthocyanidin-rich extract from seed protected against acute and chronic gastric and intestinal oxidative injury through inhibition of lipid peroxidation and membrane microviscosity in gastric and duodenal membrane [78]. It showed higher gastroprotective and antioxidant activity compared to vitamin E and C [80]. The seed also exhibited protective effect against gastric ulcer in rat.…”

“…Recently, several polyphenolic antioxidants derived from grape seeds have been implicated in cell protection (Bagchi et al, 2014;Zhu et al, 2014). Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) is a rich source of proanthocyanidins that are natural antioxidants, which are composed of various polyphenolic compounds and generally believed to protect against reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated myocardial ischemia/ reperfusion injury and apoptosis (Fan, Lou, 2004;Cuevas et al,2011;Zhu et al, 2014). Proanthocyanidins, also called condensed tannins, are oligomers and polymers Page 2 / 6 of monomeric flavonoids (flavan-3-ols), containing various amounts of catechin and epicatechin, widely distributed in the plant kingdom, and which appears in fruits, vegetables and seeds especially those extracted from grape seeds (Mouradov, Spangenberg, 2014;Malisch et al, 2015).…”
